Contempt of Court: The Turn Of-The-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism, by Mark Curriden, Leroy Phillips

The case by which the U.S. Supreme Court declared itself the highest court in the land.

When Ed Johnson, a black man, was wrongly convicted in 1906 of rape and sentenced to death in Tennessee, Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan issued a stay of execution, declaring that Johnson's right to a fair trial had been violated and that he had been railroaded through the criminal justice system. The interference of the Supreme Court was not well received back in Chattanooga. A violent mob answered this federal "interference" by dragging Johnson from his jail cell, beating him, and hanging him from a bridge. Local police did nothing to prevent the lynching, nor were any members of the mob arrested. For the first and only time in history, an enraged Supreme Court conducted a criminal trial to enforce its authority. It brought criminal contempt of court charges against the sheriff, his deputies, and members of the lynch mob.

The first book written about these highly charged events, Contempt of Court raises issues of federalism versus states' rights that are as timely today as they were ninety years ago. Johnson's case led to a precedent-setting criminal trial that is unique in the annals of American jurisprudence. Mark Curriden and Leroy Phillips's riveting tale will prove essential reading for all interested in understanding how American justice works.

Amazon.com Review
Prior to 1906, the U.S. Supreme Court had never tried a criminal case--and the high court had yet to assert its power over state criminal courts. That was all to change after the events of a cold January night earlier that year in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Blond, beautiful, 21-year-old Nevada Taylor had hopped on one of Chattanooga's new electric trolleys after work. Before she could reach home, the young woman was waylaid and raped by an unknown assailant. At first Taylor couldn't describe her attacker to town sheriff Joseph Shipp, as she hadn't seen the man clearly, but she soon became convinced he was "a Negro with a soft, kind voice." In just 17 days, a drifter dubbed a "Negro fiend" by the Chattanooga News had been hastily arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to hang.

Two idealistic black lawyers intervened, filing appeals to the state and ultimately the U.S. Supreme Court, citing the numerous rights denied the most-likely innocent Ed Johnson. (One of the attorneys said of the suspect, "But for the will of God, that is me.") The high court agreed to hear the appeal, staying the Tennessee execution. But back in Chattanooga, the politically minded Sheriff Shipp looked the other way as a bloodthirsty crowd of hundreds broke Johnson out of jail, beat him brutally, and lynched him on the county bridge.

Mark Curriden, a legal writer for the Dallas Morning News, and Leroy Phillips, a Chattanooga trial attorney, have painstakingly researched and vividly recounted the events of this oft-overlooked but significant episode in America's legal history, from the details of the original crime to the eventual federal conviction of Shipp and members of the lynch mob for contempt. A superb combination of journalistic storytelling and academic rigor. --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly
A little-known chapter in American legal history gets expert, well-deserved treatment by Curriden, legal affairs writer for the Dallas Morning News, and Phillips, a Tennessee trial attorney. The exciting narrative concerns the legal and social aftermath of the 1906 trial of Ed Johnson, a black man, for the rape of Nevada Taylor, a white woman, in Tennessee. Intimidated by threats of social unrest, the local court and law enforcement officers railroaded Johnson through an unjust trial and sentenced him to death by hanging. After Johnson's conviction, a team of local lawyers rushed to the Supreme Court for an appeal and stay of execution. In a little-used proceeding that allows for an interim decision by just one of the justices, Noah Parden, a black attorney, made the argument to Justice John Marshall Harlan and won the stay. But the local Chattanooga population became so enraged by what they saw as federal interference in local affairs that, with the assistance of the local sheriff, they stormed the jailhouse and lynched Johnson. The Supreme Court then held its first criminal trial, with the justices sitting as jurors in the case against the lynchers. The book succeeds on two levels: as an analysis of a legal precedent that paved the way for the Supreme Court, many years later, to find that the Bill of Rights applied to the states; and as a dramatic story, written with novelistic flair, of a few brave individuals who refused to be cowed by mob rule. 20 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. From Library Journal
In 1906, Ed Johnson, a black man in Chattanooga, was arrested for the rape of a white woman. A mockery of a trial ended in his being sentenced to hang. After his court-appointed lawyers abandoned him, advising accepting the verdict and dying in an orderly fashion or appealing and being lynched, two black lawyers, asserting that Johnson's constitutional rights had been violated, sought to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. In an unprecedented move, the Court intervened in the state's case, staying Johnson's execution until it could hear the appeal. Nevertheless, as predicted, a mob took him from an unprotected jail and lynched him. In another unprecedented move, the Justice Department indicted the Tennessee sheriff, his deputies, and members of the mob for contempt of court, and the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time sat in judgment of a criminal case. Journalist Curriden and Chattanooga attorney Phillips offer an intriguing look at a largely forgotten case that set historic precedents. Recommended for all larger libraries.AJim G. Justice lives, even though a citizzen died.
By Eric V. Moye
A wonderful book, which chronicles a painful time in our Nation's history. Curriden and Phillips have taken the events which led to the death of just one more poor Black man (one of far too many during that era) and explained how this incident rekindles and reaffirms the notion of the supremacy of Federal law.
A book for normal people, not just lawyers or those interested in the law or civil rights. It makes a potentially dry concept (the relationship betweenm the states and the Federal government) come to life. More importantly, its shows just how essential the concept of Federalism can be.
Should be required reading for anyone who decries the "meddlesome, activist Federal judges".

Fascinating

I cannot believe I made it through a liberal arts education and law school without knowing about this story. That this is such a recent part of our history is sad and amazing. I look forward to someone making a movie out of this well-written book so that the masses will be exposed to it. This book should be read by anyone who has the slightest interest in our legal system.

Not only did I read the book, I typed and helped edit the book with the co-author, Leory Phillips. It was as if I was transported back in time to the early 1900's. The characters seemed to come alive and will live in my memory forever. It is a read well worth your while.

God's Pauper: A Novel, by Nikos Kazantzakis

God's Pauper is an imaginative retelling of the life of St Francis. Kazantzakis' writings are an anguished expression of the eternal struggle between the spirit and flesh, and he uses the story of St Francis to draw us into the Maelstrom. The story is dramatically unfolded to us by the Saint's constant companion, Frate Leone, who takes us through agonies of physical and spiritual humiliation. We accompany the Saint before the Pope to establish his Brotherhood; to Damietta and the Saracen armies; and in solitary vigils on Mount Alvernia. The minutest and the mightiest elements of nature form the backcloth to the drama of events. Hate, compassion, jealousy and fear are among the principal ingredients in the drama, fused together with infinite subtlety.

A flawless masterpiece about the devotion of a true devotee
By Ms Fiza Pathan
A flawless masterpiece about the devotion of a true devotee.....that is the story of God's Pauper written by Nikos Kazantzakis. The epic story of the life of one of the greatest Saints in the world is narrated in a very lucid & yet heart wrenching fashion that makes the reader one with the pain & passion of the man behind the Saint.

Being a very passionate believer & student of the Franciscan way of life, I find this book quite in keeping with not only history but also with the current ideas religious personalities have about the pain behind the total annihilation of the ego (flesh in the case of Saint Francs Of Assisi). Kazantzakis in a very simple way reveals to the reader not only the life of Saint Francis. The writer does us a favour infact which I shall be ever grateful to him as a reader.....he makes the life of this pauper very REAL ! We generally find the lives of most of the Christian saints highly above our normal dealings & therefore most of the time ignore their life histories as well as their writings which seem rather dogmatic....not in keeping with our practical mindset. Kazantzakis is aware of this failing & therefore, brings out the true side of Saint Francis Of Assisi.....the struggling man to become one with his creator. It is not the lofty saint that we encounter in this classic work but, the lowly man trapped by his love for God & the desires of his flesh which he wishes to overcome. The person that we witness in this narrative is the human being that signifies ALL of us with all our faults, yet wishing to love God in perfection sans faults & sinful ways.
This is not merely a religious document, but a mirror into the heart & mind of one of the greatest mystics of the Medieval Age in Europe. Infact, I would not be wrong if I stated that this novel is the life story of a revolutionary. Saint Francis of Assisi indeed was a revolutionary not only where his thinking was concerned but also his ideals on the way his society was progressing. Kazantzakis brings to us that revolutionary.

The story is narrated by St. Francis' close comrade & fellow friar Brother Leo who although not all that divinely in tune with God (unlike his friend St. Francis) yet loves St. Francis to such an extent that he goes through the worst of situations to prove his loyalty & devotion. Brother Leo in this novel undergoes the hardships of whipping, self-torture, weather changes, sickness, hunger, thirst, mental turmoil etc., all because of his loyalty toward the person he considers to be quite sure about everything heavenly. More than just the narrator however, Brother Leo in this novel signifies...all our doubts...the scepticism that we are born with & in more than one way does he bring out his doubts. Through him, it is we who are questioning the authenticity of God & the divine call of St. Francis. Just like Brother Leo, we do not question because we think we are more than human....we question because WE ARE HUMAN & can a mere human become a saint ? Can a human give up the longings of the flesh ? Can a mere human overcome the impossible ?....these are questions posed to us & by us throughout the book.

The characters in this story may have been moulded in a different way by the author to not break the rhythm of the narrative....but they all did exist, this is history, this is fact. Not only was there the ever loyal but doubtful Brother Leo but there was also the loving Saint Clare who followed in St. Francis' footsteps ; not only was there a devoted Lady Pica the mother of St. Francis but also the crafty Brother Elias who twists the rule of St. Francis to his own liking & for his own self glory. These were REAL people like you & me who lived during troubled times & yet were asking the same questions about God & humanity that we are asking today.

The author himself has stated in the novel that he has added many stories from his own imagination at times so as to link together certain intricate parts of the legend of this peculiar medieval saint. He does so to merge the myth with the truth to bring out the essence of St. Francis' teachings.

The extraordinary part of the book is that, the wild passion of the human soul is dramatized to perfection that even if an atheist were to read this book, he would be pulled in with this tide of emotional outbursts. The maniacal side of the Saint is seen by us & also accepted by us maybe because we realize that he is one of us. His passion was for God whereas currently our passion may be for many other concerns like Democracy, elimination of corruption, feminism, Global warming , communalism......it could be anything, but we all have our own goals & our own personal barometers to assess whether we have achieved our goal. The fanatic following of the revolutionary ideals of perfect poverty, perfect chastity & perfect obedience by St. Francis reminds us of our own fanaticism to our own ideals. His extraordinary way of living.....his stigmata....his fasts........his bleeding body........his hunger.....his yearning for Saint Clara.......his semi blindness all shows a level of extreme that was revolutionary for its time & age. It was not accepted readily of course & he resented it much, but did not complain. His job was to show the passion of his devotion to the world, which he did......which we daydream about too.......to show our `different' ideas to the world which wants us to conform with its own set rules. St. Francis in the novel & in real life never followed the bandwagon but was always standing apart & therefore went the distance.

The novel finally is a revelation into our own hearts & minds........what is our real mission in life ? To conform to something that is not right or to change the rules....even if it takes us to the brink of insanity.....or sainthood!

fact & fiction
By L. A. Lewandowski
This is a book about St. Francis of Assisi. The author admits right up front that this book is a reflection on the life of St. Francis which mixes facts about his life and some "creative" fill in material that is the thought of the author. It's like the apocraphal works of the gospels - the authors take the statements in the gospels and then "fill in the blanks" to kind of like complete the stories of Jesus' "hidden" years.
The book is interesting and captivating. It does inspire the author and reader to have an appreciation and greater respect for St. Francis if you didn't have that already.

Greater in Greek
By C. Santas
I read this book in my youth while I still living in Greece in the original Greek. No translation can do justice to this masterpiece of literature (indeed none of the other works of Kazantzakis in translation can). I can only say it changed my life. The simplicity of language is amazing, for it brings to life the life of a man obsessed by his own sins, knowing himself and God after the struggle to get rid of life's luxuries and finding his final renunciation when, in the most stunning scene of the book, he finds a leper (in the middle ages an abhorrent sight) and kisses him in the mouth. This is his final love of man, and his love for God. I find, however, that reading of the work in English, while a compromise of the poetry of language, is not by any means a waste of time. I am prompted to say this, for the recent election of Pope Francis inspired me, for perhaps this spirit in the memory of Saint Francis may be bringing an inspiration for humanity.

A Funny Little Book
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
"Archy and Mehitabel" is a strange, funny little book. Drawing from the conversational poetry found in books like Edgar Lee Masters "Spoon River Anthology," Marquis uses a colloquial style which not only suits his characters, but works in a poem. Lots of laughs, some decent writing, and a tasty way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Talking animals are easy to find in literature. Good ones, like a cat and a cockroach of this caliber, are not. Marquis brings humanity by allowing his animals to stay animals. Spiders still are poisonous, rats are still threatening, and cockroaches have never been able to type the capital letters on a typewriter. Marquis pushes reality, keeping his characters grounded in truth (OK, he fudges with truth a lot, but don't let that stop you).

While filled with humorous tales, moments are sad, like in the ninth poem, "freddy the rat perishes." Dear Freddy has a run in with a spider who is up to no good. In a valiant struggle, a tough South American spider ("raised on red pepper and blood" and "nursed on tabasco sauce") Freddy is killed while saving his friends. Freddy ate some poisoned cheese the night before and let the spider bite him, knowing he had nothing to lose. After it was over, Archy and Mehitabel dropped Freddy "off the fire escape into the alley with/military honors". Despite the whole premise being ridiculous, a tear might well up.

Children will love being read the stories, and younger teens may find poetry readable (before you send them on to Keats and Byron!). Great, funny pictures, completely in the context of each poem-tale.

I fully recommend this book.

Found in a college mailbox
By Charlotte Hartzell
Archy and Mehitabel came into my college mailbox over and over again back in the early 40s. I was being courted by a fellow journalism classmate, who began typing sections from Marquis' book and sending them to me anonymously through the college post office. Occasionally, he alternated Archy with red roses. We worked together on the college publication, twice a week, for three years. And eventually married. Just last night our son, now 51, and I were recalling the book, which I had not seen (or even thought about for many years). The copy of the hardback which he gave me has long since vanished from my shelves, much to my dismay. That seems to happen to all my most favorite books! My son opened his laptop and found this familiar old "odd couple" at amazon.com, alive and doing well after all these years. I'm ordering a new copy tonight! Thanx amazon.com!

White Goddess, by Robert Graves

A work first published in 1948 in which Graves argues that the language of poetic myth current in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe was a magical language bound up with popular religious ceremonies in honour of the Moon-goddess, or Muse - some dating from the Old Stone Age.

Pagan poetry and poetic paganism
By Mark Carter
Robert Graves' study of poetry, The White Goddess, is something of a literary unified field theory. It attempts to survey nearly all of Western poetry to assess the common factors and suggest a single unifying factor by which all poetry can be understood. Of course, Graves wasn't the first to attempt such a study, but The White Goddess is perhaps the best attempt to date; coming closer than others to finding and explaining the original creative big bang which drives all poetry, and where he fails Graves is better able to hide his failure. The White Goddess argues that echoes of this original big bang resonate in literature today and Graves teaches us how to hear them.

The problem is that, like all such studies, The White Goddess evaluates poetry in light of the author's own style; and when the author is Robert Graves we can be sure that the poetry will be judged on romantic and historical grounds. Graves' defense of poetry claims that poetry's origin lies with ancient Greek, Roman, and Celtic culture, and in even more primitive traditions of tribal shamen who chanted poetry to bless the new crops, the newborns, and the newly dead. Poetry not conforming to this theory is often dismissed as inconsequential. Thus, Graves logically favors fellow romantics who address the Muse's timeless themes of birth, love, loss, and death, or the pagan poets of the Classical and pre-Classical eras.

To Graves all poetry is pagan, either overtly or covertly, and even the best Christian poetry contains a surreptitious nod to older pagan traditions or folklore. Graves' defense of pagan poetry became a defense of pagan myth, ritual, and morality as well. This is why The White Goddess became one of the inspirational texts of modern paganism and remains popular with pagan readers today. The book appeals to both the hippy style counter-culture members of the pagan community as well as the historically minded members bent on historical reconstruction. The White Goddess' controversy derives from each school's attacks and defenses of the points it contains. After 64 years the debate still rages. Perhaps that is the book's strongest point. More important than if Graves is right or if he is wrong, is the fact that he made the attempt at all and the vast amount of debatable evidence which he has brought into the light.

AN ARGUMENT THAT THE “WHITE GODDESS” IS THE “THEME” OF THE LANGUAGE OF POETRY
By Steven H Propp
Robert von Ranke Graves (1895-1985) was an English poet, novelist, critic and classicist. He wrote many books, such as Good-Bye to All That: An Autobiography, King Jesus: A Novel, I, Claudius, and Claudius the God, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 511-page paperback edition.]

In the Foreword of this 1948 book, he explains, “My thesis is that the language of poetic myth anciently current in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe was a magical language bound up with popular religious ceremonies in honor of the Moon-goddess, or Muse, some of them dating from the Old Stone Age, and that this remains the language of true poetry… The language was tempered with in late Minoan times…Then came the early Greek philosophers who were strongly opposed to magical poetry as threatening to their new religion of logic…” (Pg. 9-10)

In Chapter One, he further says, “This book is about the rediscovery of the lost rudiments, and about the active principles of poetic magic that govern them. My argument will be based on a detailed examination of two extraordinary Welsh minstrel poems of the thirteenth century, in which the clues to this ancient secret are ingeniously concealed.” (Pg. 17)

He observes, “The goddess is a lovely, slender woman … she will suddenly transform herself into … mermaid or loathsome hag. Her names and titles are innumerable. In ghost stories she often figures as ‘The White Lady,’ and in ancient religions… as the ‘White Goddess.’ I cannot think of any true poet who has not independently recorded his experience of her. The test of a poet’s vision, one might say, is the accuracy of his portrayal of the White Goddess and of the island over which she rules… a true poem is necessarily an invocation of the White Goddess, or Muse, the Mother of All Living, the ancient power of fright and lust…” (Pg. 24)

He explains, “Since the close connection here suggested between ancient British, Greek, and Hebrew religion will not easily be accepted, I wish to make it clear that I am not a British Israelite or anything of that sort. My reading of the case is that at different periods in the second millennium B.C. a confederacy of mercantile tribes… were displaced from the Aegean area by invaders… that some of these wandered north… and eventually reached Britain and Ireland… The connection, then, between the early myths of the Hebrews, and Greeks and the Celts is that all three races were civilized by the same Aegean people whom they conquered and absorbed.” (Pg. 61)

He argues, “What interests me most in conducting this argument is the difference that is constantly appearing between the poetic and prosaic modes of thought… the poetic faculty is atrophied in every educated person who does not privately struggle to cultivate it… And from the inability to think poetically… derives the failure to think clearly in prose… The mechanical style, which began in the counting-house, has now infiltrated into the university, some of its most zombiesque instances occurring in the works of eminent scholars and divines. Mythographic statements which are perfectly reasonable to the few poets who can still think and talk in poetic shorthand seem either nonsensical oR childisH to nearly all literary scholars.” (Pg. 223)

He says, “Poets who are concerned with the single poetic Theme, cannot afford to draw any disingenuous distinction between ‘sacred history’ and ‘profane myth’ and make the usual dissociation between them, unless prepared to reject the Scriptures as wholly irrelevant to poetry. This would be a pity, and in these days of religious toleration I cannot see why they need accept so glaringly unhistorical a view of the authorship, provenience, dating and original texts of the Old Testament, that its close connection with the Theme is severed.” (Pg. 314)

He summarizes, “I am suggesting that… the religious revolution which brought about the alphabetic changes in Greece and Britain was a Jewish one, initiated by Ezekiel… which was taken up by the Greek-speaking Jews of Egypt and borrowed from them by the Pythagoreans… The result of envisaging this god of pure mediation, the Universal Mind still premised by the most reputable modern philosophers, and enthroning him above Nature as essential Truth and Goodness was not an altogether happy one… The new God claimed to be dominant as Alpha and Omega… able to exist without the aid of woman; but it was natural to identify him with one of the original rivals of the Theme and to ally the woman and the other rival permanently against him. The outcome was philosophical dualism with all the tragi-comic woes attendant on spiritual dichotomy. If the True God… was pure thought, pure good, whence came evil and error? Two separate creations had to be assumed; the true spiritual Creation and the false material Creation.” (Pg. 464-465)

In the Postscript, he admits, “I am no mystic; I avoid participation in witchcraft, spiritualism, yoga, fortune-telling, automatic writing, and the like. I live a simple, normal, rustic life with my family and a wide circle of sane and intelligent friends. I belong to no religious cult, no secret society, no philosophical sect; nor do I trust my historical intuition any further than it can be factually checked.” (Pg. 488)

This book will appeal most to students of poetry and literature, and also to students of speculative interpretations of mythology.

God Should Be A Woman
By Mary Anne Haas
God should be a woman is the conclusion of this very esoteric work. It is not an easy read but a fascinating one to be digested in small bites and many meals.

And yes the book begins when god indeed was a woman pre Christianity.....pre the Christian takeover of England where the ancient goddess ruled. Graves takes us back to the nature of this great hag in her many forms and shows how the actual formation of language and written music began. Believe it or not it began with the trees of Gt Britain....the syntax of the English language that is and merges with the hand which of course goes deeper into our organs which Graves doesn't much go into but a student of acupuncture might take us there. It is just simply a fascinating work and requires patience and faith to pull through to the end where all the worlds problems are solved. Ok I'm being funny but Graves goes into the effects of a masculine god on our nature and sensibilities and shows what it has done to us and why we need a return to Mother Nature.

It is a weak ending but it shouldn't be. There is much to reflect on in this book and I highly recommend it. It will open up your world.

The Redress of Poetry: Oxford Lectures, by Seamus Heaney

There is something about a treasure, wrote Joseph Conrad, that fastens on a man's mind. And, yes, there is something about the subject of treasure hunting that continues to fascinate us. One need only browse the Web to discover a whole netherworld of treasure-hunting magazines, metal-detector clubs, and lost-mine information exchanges that apparently engage the funds and spare time of thousands of hopefuls. Charles Elliott recaptures the essential romance of the search in this collection of classic stories. Many are true - or purport to be. They take place under the sea, in jungles, on desert islands, even in the attics of old houses. What is common to them all is the excitement of the chase and the possibility - irrational, perhaps, but unavoidable - that a fabulous treasure really is there for the finding.

Review
"Nobel laureate Heaney is a pastoralist with a strong and critical sense of history. His rich and earthy poems are about the life of the land of northern Ireland as well as the evolution of the heavily mythologized Irish identity. Heaney's sonorous lyricism stems from his love of the cycles of country life, the mystery of the sea, the satisfying rhythm of hard, physical work. But Heaney loves poetry and poetics as well as nature and expresses this passion in his forceful if demanding literary essays. This is his third book of criticism, and it contains 10 lectures Heaney delivered as professor of poetry at Oxford. In the title essay, Heaney explains how poetry balances the 'scales of reality towards some transcendent equilibrium.' After considering all the burdens contemporary poets carry, from the long tradition of the form itself to pressing political perspectives, Heaney still insists that 'poetry cannot afford to lose its fundamentally self-delighting inventiveness.' This viewpoint

Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O'Driscoll, appeared in 2008. In 2009 he received the David Cohen Prize for Literature. Strong Enough To Help
By A Customer
The Redress of Poetry is a series of lectures given by Seamus Heaney at Oxford; in all of them, he examines poetry and how it can be strong enough to help the reader, to act as an equal force to the life lived by the reader. He looks at all kinds of poets - Dylan Thomas, Christopher Marlowe, Yeats, Wilde and Bishop - and of course talks about his own position as a Catholic from the Northern Ireland living in Dublin. In all the lectures Heaney is wonderfully informal and funny, while still solidly getting across how important and vital these writers are. The lecture on Thomas alone is a great lesson on writing and authenticity, and the last one, "Frontiers of Writing", makes a strong case that a nation is imagined by writers first - that language, poetry, opens up possibilities in nations as well as in people. Though he knows that words can't do everything, Heaney's affection for writing and writers is convincing. At his best, he made me want to go back to the poet and read more, and not many people can make me do that!

By 1529, the year of publication of Luther's Large Catechism, parishioners took the Gospel for granted. Many had forgotten at what great peril the freedom of their faith had been won. In the large Catechism Luther set out to inculcate the centrality of the gospel that was largely neglected and whose freedom was frequently abused.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Lutheran perspective
By A Customer
Being a Lutheran (Missouri Synod) I can say that this is one of the greatest theological writings outside of the Bible ever. It is a wonderful overview of many biblical truths. Many of his arguments such as his support for infant-baptism are practically impossible to soundly refute. If you agree with his theology or not, it is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to grow in the Christian faith or learn about what Lutherans believe.

Very Comprehensive Book
By kindred spirit
This is not light reading. If you want the ten commandments spelled out as to how every little thing that can possibly fall under it than this is your book. A must for every Lutheran home or those who are interested in the teachings of Martin Luther.
