Small, Simple, but Worthy

This book journeys back into biblical times, where the reader may learn about ancient customs, jobs, food, and furnishings of the Old and New Testaments. Now in its third edition, Concordia Publishing House first published this book in 1947 as part of the Concordia Leadership Training Series. Later, in 1959, Dr. Klinck revised the first edition (therefore, the 2nd edition). Now in this 3rd edition, Dr. Kiehl has revised the text, bringing it up to date.
Each chapter of the text list dozens of specific Bible references, which will aid any reader from pastor to layperson. Also included in this little gem are simple line drawings and illustrations that show commonly used equipment, materials, structures, and raw goods. Last, the text includes review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, which may or may not be used to increase biblical knowledge and strengthen the chapters' lessons.

"Everyday Life in Bible Times" is a Bible background book about everyday life in Bible times. It covered the time period of the whole Bible and contained scripture references (usually just the chapter and verse so you can look it up) that might make more sense after reading that section. The book is a quick, easy read, but it contained a lot of information. The book covered many subjects and described the steps of how each activity was done (based on ancient literature, archeological findings, and how similar cultures still do it).

This book covered the topics of hunting, fishing, herding (including shepherding), grain growing from sowing to harvesting, vineyards, orchards, types of food and drink and it's preparation, different types of homes and how they were furnished, various trades (weaving, spinning, dying, carpenter, potter, metalworker, tanner, tent making, stonecutter, day laborer), writing, music, time keeping, traveling, weights and measures, how they dressed, marriage ceremony, child upbringing, toys, festivals, burials, and more.

There were black-and-white line drawings of what the various tools, foods, and such looked like. This is a good, informative book, especially if you're interested in the actual steps of how an activity was done (though this isn't a do-it-yourself guide) rather than simply learning which activities were done. I'd highly recommend it.

About the Author
Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber & Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid and Birthday Letters. He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

Luther's Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. On October 22, 1512, the faculty of the still newborn University of Wittenberg welcomed an ominous new colleague to its body. Martin Luther was taken under the wing of none other than the vicar general of the German Augustinian order: Johann von Staupitz. Luther quickly advanced in honor and prestige. Once settled down and committed to university life, Luther took up his new lifework with enthusiasm. Before a year had passed, the Chronicle of Johann Oldecorp recorded: ''At this same time [1513] M. Luther began to lecture on the Psalter of David. He was very busy with this and had many hearers.'' The lectures were indeed given in the traditional fashion, but there was something new in them nevertheless, something that was talked about then and that drew ''many hearers.'' Even the modern reader of Luther s notes for these lectures can hardly escape noticing that the message, compared with that of other contemporary lectures, reveals greater individual involvement in the message being expounded. The prime emphasis is constantly on Christ as the center of the whole Psalter. The lecturer is dealing not with idle academic definitions but with the issues of life and salvation that affect the speaker and hearer directly and personally. This is where Luther's theology begins, and so these First Lectures on the Psalms (1-75) are often called initia theologiae Lutheri.

Notes and thoughts from Luther on Psalms 1 through 75

My journey through Luther's works continued. Many of my colleagues as well as in books I have read, have highly praised Luther's look at the Psalms - so maybe I ventured into this volume with too much expectation? The next is also on Psalms, so maybe some of my views might change in several weeks once I've completed that.

Anyway, I think it should be emphasised that though this is the 10th Volume, it is also some of Luther's earliest work, So one should not expected his theology to be as developed as in later works - and given that - it is valuable to see that at this early stage Luther is so focused on the Cross and the Church.

This is in no way like a modern commentary - rather it is more a collection of notes and thoughts on various Psalms. Whilst they are listed in numerical order (this volume covering 1 through 75) it is not exhaustive - with quite a few Psalms omitted. Likewise the coverage is not uniform. Some Psalms have a handful of paragraphs, others quited detailed analysis - and this is not to do with the length of the Psalm.

I still struggle with the allegorical approach to Scripture, and whilst Luther does try and ensure that all allegories are tied to New Testament Theology, he was definitely more allegorical in his earlier writings. There seems to be very little interest in the Psalms original setting - rather the Psalms are seen as being more prophetic than worship / lament / praise etc. From what I can tell this is not uncommon in the early 16th Century.

Sadly what is also not uncommon in that time period, is how often negative sentiments in the Psalms are seen as being addressed to the Jew (though sometimes to the Turk and others). I feel that later in life, Luther would have used these passages to focus on the sin in our lives. But I did find this uncomfortable at times to say the least.

There are also heaps of gems - and the concluding notes on studying scripture are excellent, for example: "That is to say, Scripture is not in our power nor in the ability of our mind. Therefore in its study we must in no way rely on our understanding, but we must become humble and pray that He may bring that understanding to us, since it is not given except to those who are bowed down and humble."

So I continue to enjoy my travels through Luther's Works - and whilst this volume hasn't been as enjoyable as previous ones, it was still quite worthwhile :)

About the Author
Jan Morris was born in 1926 of a Welsh father and an English mother, and when she is not travelling she lives with her partner Elizabeth Morris in the top left-hand corner of Wales, between the mountains and the sea. Her books include Coronation Everest, Venice, The Pax Britannica Trilogy (Heaven's Command, Pax Britannica, and Farewell the Trumpets), and Conundrum. She is also the author of six books about cities and countries, two autobiographical books, several volumes of collected travel essays and the unclassifiable Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere. A Writer's World, a collection of her travel writing and reportage from over five decades, was published in 2003. Hav, her novel, was published in a new and expanded form in 2006.

Humorous, informative with lots of anecdotes about the major players in the rise and fall of the British Empire.
Prose is suberb and you need to start the trilogy with the first volume although there is a reasonable catchup section if you skip that.

Three prison chain gang escapees are on the lam in Depression-era Mississippi. Throughout their odyssey, they encounter a cyclops (an ominous, eye-patch-wearing salesman), numerous sirens, and a rogue claiming to have compacted with the Devil to trade his soul for mastery of the Delta blues guitar. This edition emphasizes the text and offers very little in the way of camera shots, angles, and points of view. The Coens' ever-broadening fan base should make this popular in all film collections.

Required reading

I've been a fan of the Coens' movies for years and I do believe I've figured out a way to enjoy them more thoroughly: READ THE SCREENPLAY. There's no writing that's better in the movies right now. I'm not a film maker, I'm not a script writer, I'm not a director, I'm not an actor, I'm not a movie critic, I'm not even the guy who tears the ticket and stands behind that big velvet rope sayin' "To your right" or "To your left." All that I am is a fan of the movies as well as a fan of literature. These guys know how to make words create people and they do it well time after time.
Specifically "O Brother ..." is a screenplay that mixes Homer with Bluegrass with Old Movies with (whether the Coens know it or not) Mark Twain and folks along those lines. In fact, there's a scene in Huck Finn in which Huck states he'd prefer his dinner all cooked together in one pot so that the juices swap around and make things go better. That's a pretty good metaphor for "O Brother ..." Rather than the screenplay that's about hicks or racism or a woman scorned, the Coens mix it all up and believe me things go better that way.
This is the literature of our time. You should watch AND READ these movies.

Coens Are Truly Learning How To Write!

This is a fun and wacky screenplay to read! It really puts images into your mind that will make you laugh and wonder. I haven't even seen the movie yet, and I still was able to "get" the jokes and laughed a lot. Just think to yourself, "This is going to be a lot like Raising Arizona" and you'll figure it out.
Ranks right up there with the Coens' Fargo script, which is also a good read.

Abstract thought and morality

An excellent movie for someone capable of abstract thought who enjoys classic-laughing. And the morality is very clearly delivered: DON'T PRACTICE LAW WITHOUT A LICENSE! I just wish I could have had a job as an extra on this movie of Odysseus (aka, Ulysseus) originally told by Homer but recreated here by the Minnesota Coen brothers as directors.

Following in the wake of renewed interest in Larkin (1922-1985), his letters will reward the growing audience for his work. They're caustic and unceremonial, witty, sometimes savaging, always engaged. And they touch on everything from the most literary concerns (Dylan Thomas, in Larkin's view, didn't "use his words to any advantage") to personal matters and uninhibited professional complaints. One instance: Larkin remarked in 1946 that his English agent and publisher "have Daimlers and country cottages now and forevermore," while " I , the author, without whom they would be nothing but a heap of desiccated dogshit, haven't a Daimler nor a country cottage now, and as far as I can see, never will have. Bastards!" While some writers (and others) have been known, at times, to toe a line of respectability in their correspondence, Larkin's temperament seems to have forbidden that: "Dull non-day today, following a pissy evening," he noted truculently in 1979 to Kingsley Amis. Still, despite the entertaining scourges of his sarcasm, Larkin was also a sympathetic colleague and friend, suggest the letters, and this collection may make readers envy those who could call him that. Readers of Andrew Motion's recent biography (p. 646) of Larkin (d. 1985), who's now recognized as one of the great poets of our century, won't be surprised by the revelations in this generous selection of letters. Larkin's misguided sympathy for Germany in the early years of WW II, his cranky xenophobia, his outrageous misogyny, and his devastating put-downs of other poets (especially Stephen Spender, Ted Hughes, and Vikram Seth) should also come as no surprise. After all, his problems with women, his severe melancholia, and his deep- rooted misanthropy are everywhere evident in the poetry. Not to be overlooked in all the disagreeable material, though, are the elements often missing in Motion's somewhat humorless tome. In his own words, Larkin is a constant pleasure--witty, slangy, and full of profound insight into the writers who matter most to him, from his early admiration of Auden, Lawrence, and Yeats to his later veneration of fellow plain-speaking poets such as Hardy, Edward Thomas, and Gavin Ewart. Heavily represented among the recipients of these 700-odd letters are Larkin's grade-school buddies, publishers, and a few solid literary friends. With his pals, Larkin indulged his love of vulgarity: A proud masturbator, he trades soft-core porn tips with his kindred spirit, Kingsley Amis, and with poet-historian Robert Conquest. Larkin's lifelong devotion to jazz surfaces not only in his numerous discussions of favorite albums but also in the rhythms of his prose. Most touching of all, though, is the poet's long epistolary friendship with Barbara Pym, a lovely testament to their spiritual affinity--they didn't meet until very late in their correspondence. Editor Thwaite (one of Larkin's three executors) never adequately explains the most glaring omission here--the poet's letters to family members. But to Thwaite's credit, he annotates with a light hand, ensuring that no one interested in Larkin or the course of modern poetry can afford to ignore this spectacular volume. The usual Stoppard brilliance.

As what is considered a turning point in Stoppard's ability to write romance, The Real Thing includes the usual ingenius commentary on life and art this time woven through a love story. Thus, the play can be enjoyed for the usual Stoppardian elevated language and fascinating explanations of quality art as well as its touching yet clever romantic plot. Moreover, it is this plot that sets it apart from Stoppard's earlier work. The characters in The Real Thing make up complex relationships and display emotions that add another facet to Stoppard's masterful control of the language. Dialogue seemlessly drifts between discussions of language to discussions of life, all the while maintaining the level of quality for which Stoppard is famous. It is a wonderful play demonstrating wit, intelligence, cleverness, and overall entertainment in a variety of ways.
As Ros. and Guil. used Hamlet and Travesties used the Importance of Being Ernest, The Real Thing contains certain references to 'Tis Pity She's a Whore that make that Jacobean tragedy a helpful piece of background reading.

Another great play by Stoppard!

Tom Stoppard is my favorite playwright. Yet, the first time I read The Real Thing, I really disliked it. I didn't find his focus on adultry at all compelling. When I read the play for a second time, I realized that it had a lot of merit that I had not previously noticed. For example, he examines the relationship between polemic and artistic creation, between the artistry of writing and writing which is personal and passionate. Is it a good thing to be able to manipulate words for any occasion, or is it better to feel strongly about what you are writing?

In his early forties, while continuing to support himself as a laborer, we wrote, in quick succession three realistic plays about the slums of Dublin, known as the Dublin Trilogy. Juno and the Paycock, the second installment of the trilogy, was performed in the Abbey Theatre in 1924—the Abbey theatre produced the first installment of the trilogy, The Shadow of a Gunman (not included in this volume) in 1923. Juno and the Paycock deals with the unpleasantness of war and the misery of the victims during the the Irish struggle for indepenence. It was awarded the Hawthornden Prize.

As his career progressed, O'Casey experiemented with expressionism and symbolism, which resulted in Within the Gates; Red Roses for Me, a semiautobiographical work; and Cock-a-Doodle Dandy. Due to an increase of nationalism during the Civil War and Irish Independence movement, his plays were received well, although, at times, with protest and restriction.

About the Author
Sean O'Casey was born on March 30, 1880 in Dublin, Ireland. His first plays, The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, and The Plough and the Stars, also known as the Dublin Trilogy, were performed at the Abbey Theatre with great success; these plays are all collected in one volume called The Dublin Trilogy, which is available exculsively from Faber & Faber. His many works include The Star Turned Red, The Silver Tassie, and Purple Dust. He died on September 18, 1964.
