About the Author
Born in 1937, John Fletcher went to King Alfred School, Plõn, Germany and Yeovil School, Somerset. He then studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge (MA) and Toulouse University (DÉS, Dr 3e Cycle), after which he taught at Durham University (1964-66) and UEA Norwich (1966-98), first as Lecturer, then as Reader, and finally as Professor of Comparative Literature (now Emeritus). He has been visiting professor at several foreign universities, chiefly in France, but also in Denmark, Austria, Germany, Australia and Cameroon. He had begun translating from French before his retirement, an activity that continues to the present day.

In this "fond remembrance of a cherished father-daughter relationship," the elder daughter of Groucho Marx (1891-1977) reprints and briefly comments on letters she received from her father from 1938, when she was 11, to 1967, when she returned to California (where he lived) and their correspondence ceased. Writing about his successes and disappointments, Groucho also criticizes associates and his three wives, including his first, the author's mother, as he reveals what Allen calls his "sneering intelligence." He throws out quips that vividly recall his presence on stage: offering his daughter belated wishes for a happy birthday, he adds, "If you have another one, let me know in advance." While Allen claims enduring love for her father, readers will suspect more ambivalence. Now in her 60s, she recalls her expulsion from Bennington College, her ongoing psychotherapy, her broken marriage and the alcoholism from which she began to recover during the year of her father's death. Photos not seen by PW.

Groucho's daughter has collected his correspondence to her in this volume, which reveals a different man from the leering, womanizing persona he cultivated on stage. He seems to have been a sincerely caring parent, who regularly wrote his daughter witty and encouraging letters, the bulk of them between 1945 and 1955, while Miriam was at Bennington College and later at the Menninger Clinic being treated for alcoholism. Allen's cursory notes do little to explain the contents of the letters, and in any case Groucho's comments on his radio show and Hollywood friends are so entertaining on their own that they hardly require annotation. Not a necessary purchase, but fun to read.

Groucho...no difference between letters and screen.

What better way to judge a man than to see his unedited, straight from the hip letters to his daughter. I have read just about all there is to read on Groucho, but this is my most prized possession. This book shows Groucho's philosophies on family relations, government, love and home life. I felt like a fly on the wall of a private phone conversation. The letters revealed a man who had a heart of gold and a tongue of silver. I was amazed at how his wit in letters was no different from that on the screen. Big thanks to Miriam for letting us look at the private side of one of the funniest men ever.

A Master Letter Writer

Groucho Marx is known for his letter writing. This collection is great, but not as good as The Groucho Letters. Since these are only to his daughter, Miriam, they don't reflect aspects of his personality that show up in The Groucho Letters, which are collected from diverse people, family, friends, and other show people, not to mention Warner Brothers during a law suit.
But I love this collection because Groucho comes across as a loving and concerned parent who can't get enough of his children. He is supportive, generous, thoughtful and witty.

These letters show a very human side of Groucho Marx. Through all this you get to experience first hand his great wit and sense of word play. There were many dimensions to this man, and these letters provide an inside look at what made this man tick. Many thanks should be given to his daughter Miriam for this personal look into her father's life.

This book is a collection of essays released to accompany hymnal, Lutheran Worship. The essays are written by bright theologians and pastors on a range of topics concerning liturgy and worship, including Liturgical renewal, Evangelism, history, the Church Year, Church Music, the worship space, Baptism, Communion, Confession and Absolution, and the Divine Service itself. The essays are informative even to veteren pastors, yet generally they are written well enough that they can useful to any interested layman. I consider this book a MUST HAVE for any Lutheran Pastor. For those who are not Lutheran or who are interested in the liturgy will gain a well rounded understanding of worship from this book.

Well-done work on Lutheran Worship

In true LCMS fashion, this work was done by committee. A reputable group of theologians and musicians wrote on the various constructs of the liturgy and Lutheran worship. Given not only is the history, practice and commentary on various Divine Service components, but excellent essays are here to be mined, especially the opening chapter by Dr. Just and Dr. Nagel's contributions!

A must have for those serious about learning to mix drinks

If you just want a book with lots of recipe lists, this isn't your book, though it has plenty of those. If you want to know why certain types of drinks work and how to create your own, this book is indispensable. The man is genius, and his commentary about certain drinks is absolutely refreshing.

I first came across this book (1952 without illustrations) in my dad's library. I've purchased and used many other bartending books and guides and always keep coming back to Mr. Embury. He never disappoints and his personal versions of cocktails always please.

If everyone who served cocktails had a copy of this book, the notion of a cocktail party being simply "beer and wine" would be a thing of the past.

Just what I was looking for

I've been searching for just the right book for my 11 year old son and this is one has just the right look and information I wanted for him. Many other books were way too long, some with pages in the hundreds and other books were too immature for his age. This is a great beginner book for covering all of the facts and terms. An 8 yr. old would need help reading it but an 11 yr. old could read it alone. I think it would be fine even for 12-13 who hasn't learned much about reproduction and puberty. The illustrations are simple but accurate, not like some I've seen that are more like from a medical textbook or cartoonish. There is a glossary with pronunciations and definitions. I like that it is Christian and family based. It's everything I was looking for!!

Just what I was looking for

This book focuses on health and development with a beautiful Christian perspective on the changing bodies of adolescents. It gives the young reader plenty of information on understanding his or her own body. It introduces areas of social concern, such as homosexuality and pre-marital sex, but mainly focuses on the young reader and how to understand his or her own body. Unlike so many books that give "way too much information" this is a nice option for parents who just want to start with the basics.

I am grateful to Focus on the Family for recommending this book to me. It is well written though the illustrations could be better. The content is very age appropriate and was extremely well received by my child. Reading it together as we might any other book made the subject matter much easier to discuss. As part of a whole series called Learning about Sex published by Concordia, it is a great addition to any Christian person's library

A Compendium of Quotations on Church and Ministry

This is a valuable book for studying the doctrine of Church and Ministry. In separate halves of the book, Walther lays out the doctrines of church and ministry in a thesis-by-thesis style, with each thesis consisting of proof from 1) Scripture 2) The Lutheran Confessions 3) Luther and other Lutheran theologians, such as Chemnitz, Melanchthon, Gerhard, and dozens of others from that period and later; and 4) from other ancient church fathers, such as Augustine, Irenaeus, etc. While it may not be the most dynamic prose, the writing is very straightforward, and especially the lengthy quotations from Luther and Chemnitz are very instructive and helpful.

Some of the downsides of the book are that Walther does not give much intervening commentary or explanation on the quotations--there is very little material in the book that is not a quotation. This sometimes leaves you a little unclear on how Walther himself reconciled some of the apparent discrepancies between quotations on similar matters. One example is on the issue of whether a head of the household should conduct family communion. But by in large, the book is very well organized, and I learned a great deal about what the Reformers taught about the role of the pastor in the church and various controversial matters concerning both. The Lutheran theologians amply show how the doctrines presented are in harmony with and flow from the Scriptures. Altogether this is essential reading on the topic, and well-worth the time spent reading it.

Very popular lately

This is pretty standard stuff on what the church is and the place of the ministry in relation to the place of all believers in Christ. It reads like a lot of other dogmatic treatments on these things and echoes what one finds in the Small Catechism. There is not much new ground here. It has become popular in recent years because of controversies within the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod over the roles of pastors and laity. It is a necessary historical and biblical benchmark, but it is not very exciting reading. I bought a copy for a presentation I had to make, but I also found it very easy to give it away later.

Klug provides a thorough analysis of Luther and Walther's positions along with Scriptural analysis. There should be no confusion that today's pop opinions on this vital teaching is aschew with that of Luther and the church catholic.

Cover-To-Cover Evangelism, Falling Short of Proving Much

This book has opened a door in linguistic study that deserves further intensive research. The authors fall short of their goal to prove the Genesis account. But, it does seem to have evidence connecting the Oriental and Semitic mythology(in the genre of myth, I use 'myth' but I am not promoting that the accounts never happened).

Actually, the underling goal from cover-to-cover is the evangelism of Christianity. I praise the research of C.H.Kang but I wish Nelson wrote with less bias. Some ideographs are a stretch to intrepret but others would be a grand coincedence if in reality there is no connection.

I warn the uninformed that some scripture versions Nelson uses are awful translations(if they can be called translations). He adds extra events and ideas that are not found in the Genesis account so I advise everyone to have a good respectable Bible version in hand. Read the entire story passage to understand what he adds. I recommend the Jewish Publication Society's translation because the Book of Genesis was originally written in hebrew and passed orally in hebrew therefore it is only logical to use a translation that relies heavily on hebrew texts. Christian Bible versions put a lot of weight on the Septuagint(Greek translation of the Old Testament/Tanach) because there is some doctrinal issues that can be argued from it but hold no weight if you examine the hebrew it is founded upon. Or, if you are afraid of Jews translating their own religious books for you, stick with the King James version. An example is of Nelson's choice of An American Translation in chapter 8 which says "I have gotten a man, the Lord" for Genesis 4:1. In his notes he backs up this translation using Martin Luther's translation. He is basically trying to say that Adam and Eve expected Cain to be a messiah.

The authors examine ancient forms of the ideographs which sometimes reveal a clearer connection. They don't show the ancient forms for every example whether by lack of reference or maybe to hide that there is no real connection. That actually makes me weary of some claims so I advise everyone to check the Study Notes and References along with borrowing some books from your library on chinese characters. Remember the authors are biased.

I admit, my review sounds negative; but, I recommend you read it. On the whole this book deserves to be read and studied. These authors didn't create the chinese language so don't discredit the book based on the authors' motivation.

This study of the visual horror genre from Dr. Caligari to Dr. Hannibal Lecter starts with a discussion of Diane Arbus's photographs of freaks. David Skal then suggests that he will seek to "explain why the images resonated in the culture ... [and] why so much of our imaginative life in the 20th century has been devoted to peeling back the masks and scabs of civilization, to finding, cultivating, and projecting nightmare images of the secret self." Whether or not you agree with his thesis that horror is a symptom of society's ills (war, disease, poverty), you will find much of value in this thorough, highly readable history--especially the detailed accounts of the work of filmmaker Tod Browning, and of how Frankenstein and Dracula made their way from books to plays to films. The book is handsomely designed (hardcover has dust jacket by Edward Gorey), with illustrations, footnotes, and index.

This entertaining survey mixes behind-the-scenes Hollywood anecdotes with intriguing social analysis. Skal ( Hollywood Gothic ) considers the archetypes depicted in Dracula , Frankenstein , Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Tod Browning's Freaks as responses to the Great Depression that contained metaphors of class warfare. Scientific sadism in films of the 1940s drew on partial knowledge of the Third Reich, he argues, while movie monsters of the '50s personified Bomb-bred mutants or Cold War brainwashers. Skal links 1960s films' anxiety about sex and reproduction to the introduction of the Pill and Thalidomide, and suggests that horror flicks of the '70s and '80s show signs of the post-traumatic stress syndrome suffered by many Vietnam veterans. Though he analyzes Stephen King's novels, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video and Famous Monsters magazine, his book might have been richer had he delved into more non-Hollywood aspects of pop culture, such as heavy metal music. Skal, author of a terrific history of the Dracula subgenre, Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of "Dracula" from Novel to Stage to Screen ( LJ 9/15/90), offers an incisive analysis of the (mostly) American horror film. He demonstrates how historical, social, and political factors influenced (and were influenced by) Hollywood's production of this changing but almost always popular genre. Skal ventures from Tod Browning's "mutilation allegories" of the post-World War I 1920s, to the early archetypes of the 1930s (Dracula, Frankenstein, and the one-of-a-kind movie Freaks ), to the mid-1950s, and on to the AIDS metaphors in today's sex-and-splatter films. Skal also includes fresh production information and trivia. The Monster Show is much better than Walter Kendrick's recent The Thrill of Fear (Grove Pr., 1991), which deals more with literature than film. This sharply written, thoroughly researched, and unflaggingly compelling book is the best "serious" nonsurvey of the genre to date. For all cinema collections.

Wonderful book, well and lovingly written by David J Skal, although I could have done without the California/feminist/Freudian critiques that take up far too much of the last quarter of the book. The photographs are many and great. An excellent book all the way around. If you have a "Monster movie" fan on your Christmas list this would be a perfect gift.

My fault for not reading the notes better.

A little disappointing for me because I misinterpreted what this was about. The cultural background was interesting, but I was a horror movie fan from the 1950's when they started showing the old Universal movies from the 1930's and wanted to read more about the making of the movies. My fault for not reading the notes better.

Frightfully good

Wonderfully witty and well written, this is a cultural history that well deserves its name. The first half plays up to Skal's strength as a film historian but the second half, which detours into comic books, Stephen King, monster models, the Adams Family, etc. is marred with passages of psychobabble and strained analysis. Mostly however this is an entertaining and near definitive exploration of things delightfully horrible. And the illustrations are great!

Ancestors found

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a distant cousin. As it turns out it provides substantial insights into events directly impacting 4 of my ancestors. The political, cultural and religious events leading to their emmigration from Saxony to St. Louis are thoroughly documented in this book making it a must read for persons researching their family history if their ancestors were part of that particular emmigration. The events leading to their decision are explained in some detail which helps to personalize history. It is lengthy but it a good read.

I purchased the book from Concordia Publishers (cph.org) in order to learn more about the history of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Also, since I am one half of German descent on my maternal side, I wanted to know more about the factors which prompted the emigration of Saxon Lutherans to America between 1839-41. This book, ably researched and well written by Walter O. Forster, opened my eyes to many aspects of the historical record I had not been previously aware of. The conditions in Germany and Saxony, the description of the issues facing the "state" Lutheran church, the role of the pietists, rationalists, and separatists, and how the intellectual and philosophical climate of Lutheran academia impacted on the perfect storm of social and religious upheaval are explored in depth.
No doubt Martin Luther, had he been alive during those chaotic times, would have wondered why so many intellectuals of the time had abandoned Lutheran orthodoxy to rationalism, and sought to be part of the age of enlightenment popular in academic circles. It has always been true that even the finest minds in the universities of Germany in those years could often read the pulse of the ordinary Lutheran erroneously, and perceive that the thinking of the day had thoroughly infected the masses. In my own narrow bias, I do not see the ordinary Lutheran farmer, working from dawn to dusk to support his family's needs, would have become apathetic, lose his faith to rationalist ideology, and join those who were irreligious. I like to feel that many ordinary people of the day, steeped in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, were protected by the Holy Spirit from heresy, as God, in His providence protects His children to this very day.
The book does an excellent job of describing Martin Stephan, C.W.F. Walther, and others who formed the group of separatists who followed Lutheran orthodoxy, and when the climate of Saxony was hostile to their faith and doctrines, determined to find a new home in America, where Europeans immigrants of all kinds found religious liberty. Interesting enough, the failings of Martin Stephan in both his religious leadership and personal life caused his downfall and removal as leader of the Saxon Lutherans a year after arriving in America. In my mind, it is a testament to the early Missouri Synod Lutherans that they would not tolerate such behavior and sought to honor God and the tenets of the faith by pruning the branch before the whole tree became rotten.
I recommend this book to all members of the LCMS, and to all people of German extraction and interested in the history of Germany and Saxony, as a supplement to other sources. It is easy enough to read, not as dry as some history records can be, and it is sure to enlighten the reader. Walter O. Forster's book is, in my view, a must read. Great for exploring family history!

I bought this because I have several ancestors who are mentioned in this book. It has been very useful for me in my geneology work. It is also well-written and easy enough to read but I wouldn't call it a "fun" novel to sit down and enjoy. It's mainly history and well-worth the price for anyone who is researching their family history.
