The Name of this Book is Dogme95, by Richard Kelly

The first in-depth examination of the popular and controversial Danish film movement.

The future of filmmaking starts here. What began as a ripple of discontent in Denmark has turned into a full-fledged new wave. In 1995, when Lars von Trier, not yet the award-winning director of Breaking the Waves, and three comrades issued a tenpoint "Vow of Chastity" for the making of simpler, more truthful movies, cynics in the film business refused to take it seriously. Five years later, the international success of the raw, uncompromising Dogme95 films -- most notably The Celebration and The Idiots -- has fired a volley of shots across the bows of a staid and bloated Hollywood-driven industry. Richard Kelly's investigation of the Dogme95 movement is a piece of "gonzo journalism" in which Kelly sallies forth in search of the Dogme brothers and their accomplices, seeking to hammer out truth from rumor in what is itself an appropriately austere and anarchic piece of cinematic mischief. Composed of interviews with the filmmakers, discursive overviews of the films and shooting, and Kelly's own diaries, The Name of This Book Is Dogme95 is nothing short of a piece of instant film history.

Review
"A hearty attempt to make sense of Dogme . . . [and] . . . an engaging documentary."
--Premiere

"At last, the perfect documentary for cineastes and fans of Danish cinema."
--Hollywood Reporter

From the Inside Flap
"Richard Kelly's engaging investigation of the Dogme movement . . . takes several pot shots at mainstream cinema. Kelly is also an astute observer of Dogme eccentricities and the movement's place in film history, and his book--a kind of travel narrative--is written in a breezy, accessible style." --Jonathan Bing, Variety

"Serious students of cinema will enjoy Richard Kelly's investigation of Lars von Trier's Vow of Chastity, a 10-point manifesto intended to create 'simpler, more truthful, less boring movies'. It is a lot more fun than Festen." --London Evening Standard, 'Film Books of the Year'

"Extremely illuminating, often hilarious . . . Kelly has avoided the trap of deathly-dullness that most arthouse companions fall into. If you want to know more about Dogme then this is the best place yet." --Total Film

Quite simply tells you all you need to know about Dogme95
By dragonness
I disagree with the reviewer below who criticises the book for not exploring more thoroughly the impact of Dogme95 on digital film-making - while Dogme production so far proves that DV is a perfectly viable way to make films, that's not what it set out to do. The authors of Dogme95 themselves have repeatedly said that this wasn't about digital video at all. The book clarifies that Trier's and Vinterberg's initial motivation for the Manifesto was to prohibit all those things that make Hollywood untruthful, unrealistic and annoying. It also confirms that the Dogme rules were set to be broken, to encourage other filmmakers to create rules of their own, and to generally revive what Hollywood has turned into a technology-led industry where the director and writer hardly have a say any more. The fact that the Dogme rules require a greater immediacy in the approach to making a film naturally led the directors to use DV, to 'shoot from the hip', but that was a side-effect of the movemenet and not its objective.

I actually like the simple, interview-style approach Kelly has to the material. There's been so much hype around this movement, so much misunderstanding, that the best way to explain it is not to try to explain it, but to let its authors say it in their own words.

Kelly maintains respect for his subject while not taking himself too seriously: the book is a quick and easy read, sprinkled with self-deprecating Brit humour.

I would just encourage readers to see the movies first as there are necessarily quite a few spoilers in the book.

The results of Richard Kelly's journalistic inquiry
By Midwest Book Review
Richard Kelly decided to research the Dogme95 movement launched in March 1995 by Danish director Lars von Trier and three of his friends as part of a "new wave" of avant-garde film of simpler, more truthful, and less boring movies. But with the emergence of such Dogme95 films as Festen, The Idiots, Mifune, and The King is Alive, Danish cinema was galvanized, energized and engaged in a show of solidarity against the Hollywood mainstream. The results of Richard Kelly's journalistic inquiry is now published, available, and highly recommended to film students, movie critics, cultural historians, film school reference libraries, and the non-specialist general reader as The Name Of This Book Is Dogme95.

Not well researched

There doesn't seem to be any voice to the author. This book is like a college term paper on DOGME--I give it a C. The book reads like a collection of magazine articles or an unauthorized biography. We have seen most of this material covered in indie filmmaker magazines countless times before. Dogme is a niche component of a larger digital film movement that is sweeping cinema and threatening celluloid. I would have appreciated more discussion of the impact and influence of dogme on the current mavericks of digital filmmakers that are arising and gaining respect. Digital filmmaking has greatly impacted the short film industry. Where does dogme and short film co-exist

High Windows, by Philip Larkin

Larkin's final collection of poems shows, as does all his best work, his ability to adapt contemporary speech rhythms and everyday vocabulary to subtle metrical patterns and poetic forms. Many of the poems in the collection, which includes some of his best-known pieces ("The Old Fools", "This Be the Verse", "The Explosion", and the title poem) show the preoccupation with death and transience that is so typical of the poet.

Oddly uninspired given his previous work.
By Robert Beveridge
Philip Larkin, High Windows (Faber, 1974)
Larkin, the celebrated librarian-poet, got somewhat cranky in his middle age. He also got more experimental, both qualities that make for fine poetry. Add to these scurrilousness, a wicked sense of humor, and an ear for rhythm matched only in the modern world's finest poets, and you have a recipe for greatness.
So why doesn't Larkin always pull it off? Good question. When he's on, he's very, very on, but when he's off, it's a mess. Unlike most poets, Larkin seems to have been able to switch back and forth between formal and free verse at will a number of times, but he did make the grade-school gaffe of trying to combine the two more than once. And a good deal of his "politically incorrect" (for lack of a better term) poetry smacks more of the juvenile than the Shakespearean:
"Jan von Hogspeuw staggers to the door
And pisses at the dark. Outside, the rain
Courses in cart-ruts down the deep mud land.
Inside, Dirk Dogstoerd pours himself some more..."
("The Card-Players")
Despite these excursions into the ridiculous, however, Larkin does still exhibit his mastery more often than not in this slim volume, and it's worth picking up either for the established Larkin fan or the newcomer who wonders what happened to metrical poetry after World War II. ***

Philip Larkin speaks to me much more than do most poets.
By R. M. Peterson
Continuing my re-reading of Philip Larkin's poems continues to be a treat. HIGH WINDOWS is from 1974. Larkin was then fifty-two. It turned out to be his last book of poetry (aside from selections and collections). Poet's block then descended on Larkin, who never had been a prolific poet.

In part that no doubt was because he was such a consummate craftsman. He adapts his poetry to formal constraints, which surely demands considerably more effort from the poet but for me results in poems more powerful, more moving than virtually all of free verse. And his end-rhymes -- which nineteen of the twenty-four poems in this book employ -- are so creative, intricately fashioned, yet generally understated.

A good example is "The Building", which is about a hospital. It is one of the longer poems in the book, at sixty-four lines. It consists of nine stanzas of seven lines each, with one solitary FINAL line. The end-rhymes carry over from one stanza to the next. Here is the conclusion of the poem:

* * * All know they are going to die.
Not yet, perhaps not here, but in the end,
And somewhere like this. That is what it means,
This clean-sliced cliff; a struggle to transcend
The thought of dying, for unless its powers
Outbuild cathedrals nothing contravenes
The coming dark, though crowds each evening try

With wasteful, weak, propitiatory flowers.

As it does in "The Building", death looms large over the entire book. And it is broader than personal death. HIGH WINDOWS also is an elegy for England. For example, here is a stanza from "Going, Going":

And that will be England gone,
The shadows, the meadows, the lanes,
The guildhalls, the carved choirs.
There'll be books; it will linger on
In galleries; but all that remains
For us will be concrete and tyres.

But HIGH WINDOWS is not all doom and gloom. There are flashes of life and gaiety, though often, in their case, Philip Larkin himself is a spectator, observing with rueful, self-deprecating humor, as in the opening stanza of "Annus Mirabilis":

Sexual intercourse began
In nineteen sixty-three
(Which was rather late for me)--
Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban
And the Beatles' first LP.

Over the past two years, I have been trying to read a book of poetry every month or so. I have found that, in general, I do not understand or am utterly indifferent to at least half the poems in a book and I end up marking about ten percent of the poems to return to some indefinite day in the future. With Larkin, the poems I don't understand or don't care for number only one in four, and in HIGH WINDOWS I marked eight of the twenty-four poems as special. Needless to say, Philip Larkin speaks to me much more than do most poets.

Make time!
By courtney J angermeier
Phillip Larkin rocks. When I was a sophmore in college I burned down my dorm room and my copy of High Windows. It was truly tragic. This slim little volume contains some of Larkin's best work. It is wry, revealing, and sardonic in true Larkin fashion. I particularly like the title poem and None of the Books Have Time. Also, there's one in there about the stubborn stupidity of old folks that is absolutely delightful and hilarious though the title escapes me at the moment. Anyway, this small book that won't take up either much time to read or much space on the shelf is a delightful and highly recommended piece. One of my all-time favorites.

Ethan Coen and Joel Coen: Collected Screenplays 1: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen

These four early works by the internationally lauded filmmaking team deal with the subject for which they are best known: corruption and crime in situations that combine the real and the surreal with the hilarious. Of the scripts included here, Barton Fink--an intense look at the psychological ruin of a New York playwright trying to make it in 1940s Hollywood--is a masterful culmination of these themes.

It's Raising Arizona
By GERALD L AHMANN II
The best movie EVER! The straight script, I had hoped to stumble onto some dialogue that wound up on the cutting room floor but to no avail. Being interested in screenplay writing I was curious how the Coen's conveyed all of the sight humor into their screen play. If your looking for screen play examples (the how to write a screenplay books are worthless) this has been very helpful to me. Too bad their aren't any story boards to go with it.

A collection of great scripts
By SZ
What is there to say? Joel and Ethan Coen are some of the best screenwriters working in the business. This book is a collection of their first 4 scripts filmed on the big screen. Please note that the scripts dont appear to be the final shooting version of the scripts, because last night I was watching Miller's Crossing and Blood Simple back to back and I noticed how some dialogue was changed and some scenes were excluded completely. There is nothing wrong with this and is probably even better so you can see the raw ideas the Coen Brother's had of their stories before filming them. Each one of these scripts are great on their own, and its amazing that they were written by two guys consecutively. Most writers couldn't write a script as good as Barton Fink or Raising Arizona, but these two brothers wrote them one after another. Barton Fink stands alone as the best script in this collection in my opinion. It is the ONLY film to have swept all the major categories at the Cannes Film festival. In conclusion, If you are taking a film writing course in college, or aspire to be a screenwriter and need some inspiration, then this collection is truly tremendous. All four of these scripts are great. I believe there is a Volume 2 of this book, but I would only get it for Fargo and The Big Lebowski, whereas in Volume 1 all the scripts are good!

What the two great modern revolutions can teach us about democracy today

The American and French revolutions presented the world with two very different visions of democracy. Although both professed similar Enlightenment ideals of freedom, equality, and justice and set similar political agendas, there were also fundamental differences. The French sought a complete break with a thousand years of history; the Americans were content to preserve many aspects of their English heritage. Why did the two revolutions follow such different trajectories? And what lessons do they offer us about democracy today? In lucid narrative style, Dunn captures the personalities and lives of the great figures of both revolutions, and shows how their stories added up to make two very different events.

Amazon.com Review
American historians have long appreciated France's contribution to the American Revolution, led by champions such as the Marquis de Lafayette and given full force by the combined Franco-American defeat of the British army at Yorktown. French historians have returned the favor by analyzing the contribution of American revolutionary thought to the French Revolution, which followed the American struggle for independence by only a decade.

Susan Dunn adds a well-written, lively narrative history to the record, with a cast of characters that ranges from the austere warrior George Washington to the firebrand Robespierre. More importantly, she limns just how different the American and French revolutionary projects were. In her view, the American Revolution emphasized personal freedom, thanks in large measure to the arguments of philosophers mistrustful of government in any form (Thomas Jefferson and James Madison among them). For the French, she suggests, personal freedom was of less importance than consensus, public order, and economic democracy; of paramount concern was the incorporation of ordinary people, the Third Estate, into the state. Comparing the American Bill of Rights with the French Declaration of the Rights of Man, Dunn shows how these "sister revolutions" diverged. The result is an engaging work of political history, one that illuminates the events of later years on both sides of the Atlantic. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
The American and French Revolutions claimed the same Enlightenment ideals: freedom, equality, justice. Still, the two events were profoundly different in method and result. The American Revolution led to a well-reasoned public dialogue on the nature of democracy and the role of the fledgling government. This dialogue culminated first in the Articles of Confederation and then the Constitution, on which the country has been anchored securely ever since. The French Revolution, on the other hand, led to the height of unreasonableness: a bloodbath of recrimination followed by a fragile republic destined to yield again and again to upheaval. Williams College professor Dunn (The Deaths of Louis XVI) explores the roots of these differences, finding that they spring from differences in the basic philosophy of citizenship espoused in each embryo state. While the Americans believed individual rights to be paramount, the French insisted on the appearance of public unity. Individual liberty was no more valued in the early French Republic than it had been under the Bourbons, she explains: "Armed with the 'truth,' Jacobins could brand any individuals who dared to disagree with them traitors or fanatics," writes Dunn. "Any distinction between their own political adversaries and the people's 'enemies' was obliterated." And as Dunn observes, tyranny does not good nation-building make. Dunn's comparative analysis is solid and well articulatedAas far as it goes. A penultimate chapter, "Enlightenment Legacies," which treats the influence of the French and American experiences on subsequent revolutions from Russia to Africa, only begins to explore the legacies left by the sister revolutions. From Library Journal
In this insightful work, Dunn (history of ideas, Williams Coll.) quickly puts to rest the mistaken notion that all political revolutions are the same. She notes that while the American and French revolutions were "sister" revolutions, there were some distinct differences, most importantly in visions employed and policies pursued. Dunn explores the dramatic differences between these two ideological episodes of the modern political world, illustrating the limits and excesses of revolutionary political thought and behavior. Central to her work is the thesis that the American revolutionaries were more properly guided by skepticism concerning the perils of putting too much faith in reason; they believed, she argues, that experience and a healthy dose of historical understanding and appreciation were critical. Highly recommended for all public libraries.AStephen Kent Shaw, Northwest Nazarene Coll., Nampa, ID

French Rev Bad; American Rev Good
By M. Swinney
I am surprised that there aren't more books out there tying together the American and French Revolutions. I read this book as part of the Brother's Book Club (BBC) and thoroughly enjoyed the e-mail discussions it generated. If you are looking for a chronological historical breakdown of the two revolutions, this would not be the book to get. If, however, an analytical breakdown of the causes that generated and fueled the two revolutions, the thought that kept them aloft, the intellectual connection and differences between the revolutions, and lastly the impact that they had upon the rest of the world; all sound compelling to you, then by all means go buy this book.
One detractor is Dunn's oversimplification in her critical look at everything involving the French Revolution and high praise for all things American Revolution. She follows this code, almost without exception. A more objective analysis would have been more meaningful and valid. The strength of the book is Dunn's revelation of the power of ideas. She makes it inducingly clear that the historically decisive actions of the world were driven by the power of ideas.
Perhaps the most compelling chapters come at the end, as Dunn stretches intellectually by portraying the two revolutions as models and exploring the effect they have had on subsequent revolutions around the globe. The biggest surprise is that after Dunn praises the American model, she concludes by finding America's current system of government inefficient and suggests that the British Parliamentary model is the best fitting for modern day democracies. How we come full circle.
Good book for those interested in the thought process behind the American and French revolution, but not so much for a historical breakdown of the two. Through exploring the power of ideas, Dunn comes up with some powerful ideas of her own.

An Innovative Look at Revolutions
By Invisigoth Gypsy
This is an innovative book that compares the French and American Revolutions, in both their successes and shortcomings, as well as their influences on modern Revolutions. The American Revolution had always seemed like dead, textbook history to me until I read 'Sister Revolutions.' It brought both movements to life, and theorized on how the best of each could be combined for a successful modern Revolution. Definitely a book worth reading!

Explores Why a Revolution Succeeds
By Dana Keish
Author Dunn explores the French and American Revolutions of the late 18th century. She does an excellent job of describing the differences between the two political systems, one based on concensus but with a loyal opposition (American) and one based on total unity (French). The most interesting idea developed is that the French Revolution served as a harbinger of the Russian Revolution. The will of the people would be served by an elite few who remained convinced of their leadership even when deserted by the people they served. The French leaders are portrayed as idealist who tried to create an impossible system while the American leaders were politicians who knew that to create a workable system, some ideas had to be sacrificed.
I would strongly recommend this book to any reader with an interest in history. Well written and well researched, the author ends the book with two chapters about the revolutions in Russia and Vietnam and how these revolutions borrowed ideas from the French and American revolutions.

Jacqueline du Pre, by Elizabeth Wilson

Authorized by du Pre's husband, Daniel Barenboim, this is the fullest account yet of the life of the brilliant cellist, struck down in her prime by multiple sclerosis. Charting her career from her early identification with the sound of the cello, through her debut at sixteen to the achievement of international stardom by her early twenties, Elizabeth Wilson examines the origins and nature of Jackie's prodigious talent - having talked to nearly everyone in musical circles who knew her well - and assesses her lasting importance as an interpreter. She describes her transformation from coltish girl to woman, and her marriage to the brilliant Daniel Barenboim, concluding with a sensitive account of du Pre's decline, when, no longer able to play, she struggled bravely against the ravages of her illness, until her death in 1987.

Amazon.com Review
This biography of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré, who died in 1987 after a long struggle against multiple sclerosis, has been written with the full support of her husband, the musician and conductor Daniel Barenboim. At first sight it could be construed as something of a counterweight to books critical of Barenboim written by du Pré's brother and sister--in particular A Genius in the Family. But while Barenboim does present his side of the story--in relation to both du Pré's illness and the strains it put upon their marriage--Elizabeth Wilson has in fact presented a balanced portrait of du Pré not only as a woman but also as an artist. And this is the book's real strength.

Wilson, a cellist herself, knew du Pré in her playing days and has paid as much attention to the music as to the offstage emotional dramas. She burst upon the music scene as a phenomenally talented 16-year-old, and ever since, du Pré's fame and tragic life story have made the task of stripping the myth from the reality no easy task. In fact, Elizabeth Wilson has done a professional job in unraveling du Pré's enigmatic life and legacy, but most of all, she reminds us that du Pré became famous in the first place because of her genius as a musician. --Nick Wroe, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
The classical cellist, who flourished briefly as the brightest young star in the firmament in the 1960s and early '70s, only to see her career ended before she was 30 by multiple sclerosis, still causes a stir a dozen years after her premature death. Unlike the rather controversial memoir by du Pr?'s brother and sister that became the basis of the recent, well-received movie Hilary and Jackie, Wilson's thorough and carefully considered work evidences no such sensationalism. As someone who knew the subject for much of her life (and as a cellist herself), Wilson is in an unusually strong position of being able to write from both personal knowledge and professional expertise. Her evocation of du Pr?'s performance abilitiesAher great strengths, occasional excesses and her close attention to the still largely available recorded legacyAis invaluable. As to the more scandalous aspects of her subject's life, involving an affair with her sister's husband and seeming neglect of the parents who had done so much for her, Wilson finds that these elements occupied only a brief period of du Pr?'s life, when she was in a state of great nervous and mental confusion as her illness began to take its toll. It does seem clear that du Pr?, a remarkably unschooled and innocent person to have achieved such a degree of fame when barely into her 20s, was out of her depth in the high-powered, jet-setting crowd of musicians who hung out with her new husband, pianist-conductor Daniel Barenboim, and that this may have exacerbated her anxieties. In any case, this account of her legacy, as musician, teacher and benefactress to those similarly stricken, is notably the definitive one. Photos.

From Library Journal
Cellist Jacqueline du Pr? was arguably the most famous British musician of the 20th century. A "golden girl" prodigy, she was part of a dazzling group of musicians that included her husband, pianist-conductor Daniel Barenboim; Itzhak Perlman; Vladimir Ashkenazy; and John Williams. Her gift for communication through music and her imaginative, free-spirited nature caught the attention of the press and the public. Her fame only increased when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 28 and her career was cut tragically short. Wilson, herself a cellist, had access to family papers and the full cooperation of du Pr?'s husband. Her thorough book goes into great detail about du Pr?'s musicianship without slighting her compelling personal story and replaces Carol Easton's more general Jacqueline du Pr?: A Biography (Summit, 1989. o.p.), which focuses less on du Pr?'s music. This will be of special interest to musicians and music lovers, though the recent release of the biographical film Hilary and Jackie may increase general interest. Highly recommended.AKate McCaffrey, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, NY

Good bio
By J. Okamoto
Jacqueline du Pré was a child prodigy on the cello. She made her debut at the age of 16, having been held back by her mother and cello teacher. But once she hit the stage - she became an international star. Her playing was so interpretive that she was often criticized for detracting from the music. However, she also influenced many notable classical musicians of our time with her fervent interpretations of the cello repetoire. Her career as a cellist, however, was short-lived as, at the age of 27, she was diagnosed with MS. Her cheerful demeanor and courageous outlook on life is chronicled here, as are most of her performances.
This biography, while some times reading like a discography of Jacqueline du Pré is a very biased toward du Pré's husband's point of view, but much more even-handed about du Pré than Hilary and Jackie. However, Elizabeth Wilson is herself a cellist and student of du Pré and she makes a lot of assumptions that the reader will also have a thorough understanding of certain musical terminology such as up or down bow or glissando. This is an interesting book, but may be terdious to anyone who does not have a thorough grounding in the cello repetoire, classical music or the playing of a stringed instrument.

A very complete, very "British" book
By Ed Ting
Du Pre-philes are going to be flush with pleasure after reading this. It's a scholarly work that seemingly pins down every concert that Du Pre ever played, often with mini-reviews of the performances. It's far preferable to the trashy "Hilary and Jackie" and does far better service to Du Pre's life and art. Thankfully, the ending segments dealing with Du Pre's illness are short and to the point.
American readers should be aware that this is a VERY "British" book. Wilson uses British spelling and grammar throughout, and assumes a knowledge of the local geography. Like many British writers, Wilson has a charming ignorance of America, and even goes as far as to "correct" our spelling - "The Lincoln Centre (sic)", "Pittsburg (sic)", "The Carnegie Hall (sic)". On page 300, a truck stop in the Midwest is hilariously referred to as a "highway transport cafe."
Recommended for Du Pre's many fans.

Excellent, balanced biography
By A Customer
Wilson's book about J. DuPre provides a balance to Wilson's and to Hilary DuPre's books. This book is a tribute to her musical genius, her inspiration to female cellists. With the author being both a cellist and a friend of J. DuPre, the depth of the book exceeds what the others pretend to offer. After reading the book, I listened to DuPre's performance of the Schumann and Elgar Concertos and marveled at her talent. The tragedies in her life and her relationship with her family should not overshadow her genius. I am eager now to view the documentaries produced by C. Nupen about this musical treasure whose life was cut short way too early.
