An excellent account of a literary life

These memoirs by Sylvia Beach--originally published in the 1950s--are reprinted here exactly as published. Ms. Beach became one of the most prominent Americans in Paris during the twenties and thirties by opening a bookstore called "Shakespeare & Company" (the title of this book). But to refer to her as a "bookstore manager" misses the point completely. Shakespeare & Company was a meeting place for many of the literary luminaries living in Paris at the time, including James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Her personal account places the reader in the center of their lives in a way no biographer looking back eighty years could dare to accomplish. Most notably, though, is Ms. Beach's support of James Joyce. When Joyce's masterpiece "Ulysses" looked as if it might not be published because of the fear of censorship exhibited by some of the established British and American publishing companies, Ms. Beach took it upon herself to take Joyce's finished manuscript to a printer in Dijon, and published the book herself, thereby ensuring that the world would experience this novel as Joyce intended. In fact, she exhibited admirable patience by allowing Joyce to correct proofs innumerable times and to increase the size by one third after it had been initially typeset by hand.
These memoirs are anecdotal and readable and the story moves along quickly. The only criticism I have, however, is that having read subsequent works, such as the Fitch book on Sylvia Beach, there were a few occasions in this volume when the editors back in the 1950s cut sections of her manuscript that dealt with "controversial" subjects, such as the relationship between Ms. Beach and the French bookseller Adrienne Monnier. One would hope at some time a publisher might afford Ms. Beach the opportunity she gave to James Joyce: to have the book published as she intended.

A real treat for book lovers.

Every once in a great while I stumble upon a book I've never heard of and feel as though I've discovered treasure. This is such a book. Though I had heard of Sylvia Beach and her famous book shop/lending library, her memoir "Shakespeare & Company" was unknown to me. In an easy, conversational style, Beach gives the history of her shop and observational portraits of the various artists who treated her establishment as a salon of sorts. These artists included Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot and Andre Gide, among others. She expounds upon her experiences as James Joyce's publisher and benefactress to a considerable depth, while never overtly acknowledging the intimate nature of her relationship with Adrienne Monnier. Beach's life in Paris and her interactions with 'the lost generation,' was published almost fifty years ago, but remains engaging, enjoyable and relevant today. Indeed a treat.

Shakespeare would be proud

What a wonderful find! This book is truly a treasure and made me wish I had been an author in Paris during the 20's. Sylvia Beach ran her library Shakespeare and Company on the left bank on Rue l'Odeon for many years and served as the location for English language books in Paris. During that time she worked closely with Joyce and personally handled not only publishing Ulysses but also took care of all his mail and the shipping of his books to various customers around the world.

There is a rather funny scene she describes. Because it was so hard to get Ulysses into America (since it was banned), Sylvia had a dilemma concerning distribution. Hemingway, who proclaims himself Sylvia's "best customer", tells her not to worry and within a few days he comes back to let her know he has a friend who has moved to Canada who will personally bring the books into America by ferry, stuffed in his pants.

I cannot say enough what a beautiful book this is. Beach is as gifted as the authors she esteemed and brings to life a world you wish you could climb into.

I would also highly recommend A Moveable Feast by Earnest Hemingway in conjunction to this.

Gus Van Sant is fascinated by fanaticism and the isolated societies that fanatics create. My Own Private Idaho, loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV plays, is perhaps the most critically acclaimed of his films. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, adapted from the Tom Robbins novel, did not fare well at the box office, but the version printed here is not the one seen in theatres. It is Van Sant's original draft, the cut he had to pare down for general distribution. Rejecting traditional technical markings, dotted by his own personal notes and comments, Van Sant's screenplays are essential companions to his finished films.

Published with the "completist" fan in mind.

I'm a little agog at other Amazon reviewers of this title. They seem to be reviewing the film version of "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" rather than its original Van Sant screenplay or even the second screenplay in the book. Why would you want to buy this title? I bought it because I enjoy Van Sant's films and because I'm an unabashed River Phoenix fan. So, if you, like me, are simply a fan, you will enjoy this title. You will enjoy reading Van Sant's markings as well as his discussion of how the screenplays developed and why he writes as he does. You will enjoy remembering the films as you read the words and marvel at the differences between origin and finished project. You'll lament at what was lost to Hollywood convention, and you'll nod wisely at what was changed to make the film evolve. No need to get this is you are simply a Tom Robbins fan. You want this if you know your Van Sant.

Read the Novel

This volume, suitable only for serious Gus Van Sant fans, contains the original script text for the disasterous movie of the fine Tom Robbins novel. The script adaptation drags and completly loses the counterculture spirit of the novel. Unless you are a film student, skip this and read the novel while listening to k.d. lang's excellent film score.

Ibsen's classic play was greeted with shock on its first production in 1879, with both its style and subject matter being seen as radical and subversive.

About the Author

Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen was born in 1828. His plays include Peer Gynt (1867), A Doll's House (1879), Ghosts (1881), An Enemy of the People (1882), Hedda Gabler (1890), and The Master Builder (1892). He died in 1906.

Frank McGuinness was born in Buncrana, Co. Donegal, and now lives in Dublin, where he teaches at University College. His plays include: The Factory Girls (1984), Baglady (1985), Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme (1985), Innocence (1986), Carthaginians (1988), Mary and Lizzie (1989), The Bread Man (1991), Someone Who'll Watch Over Me (1992), The Bird Sanctuary (1994), and Mutabilitie (1997). His translations include Ibsen's Rosmersholm (1987), Peer Gynt (1988), and Hedda Gabler (1994); Chekhov's Three Sisters (1990), Uncle Vanya (1995); Lorca's Yerma (1987); Brecht's The Threepenny Opera (1991); and Ostrovsky's The Storm (1998).

Be careful

This edition of the play was apparently cut for acting purposes, something I found out only after using it to prepare for a group reading of the play aloud. It does not contain the full text of the play; nor does it have the character of the original. I wish that had been made clear before I purchased it.

Read it Aloud.

Ibsen's best known play about the strictures imposed on women by society. It may be from a hundred years ago, but the plight of Nora and her world is a cautionary tale about life now.

Nora is simple and yet there is a complexity about her. Her naiveté is both her charm and her undoing. Torvald, her husband, is prominent and she is to be showy--a living doll. Nora is to be a mirror that reflects her husband beautifully.

The plot concerns financial woes in the marriage--and secrets kept and broken--in these, the story is not unlike most stressful marriages.

We can speculate about what Nora could or should have done but the die is cast.

This play is good for helping younger readers understand that assumptions about roles in marriage are still there, and have to be understood and discussed in order to help a marriage thrive.

If you have a place where you can read this aloud, try it. Plays were meant to be spoken. The translation is superb.

In this play by Ibsen Nora loses the ability to make Torvald love her any longer. This is the epiphany. Nora is the protagonist, she is a "doll" living within Helmer's house. Nora is strictly to look good and to keep her husband happy. In this play beauty is the motif that is recognized throughout. To Helmer Nora is an object, a trophy. When Nora's epiphany is finally relized by the reader she is in the middle of her awakening. Here we find the climax of the play. Nora is looking for Torvald to correct her wrong doing, and in doing so Nora sees the failure of her marriage. And now knows she must leave the false society she has know for so long and start a new.

Fun to see and fun to perform

The play begins with two critics "conversing," which is pretty much both of them talking about their own thing and assuming the other is listening. While this goes on, the first to characters to be seen are introduced. For roughly the first half of the play basically deals with a new man in the area being introduced to the house and how both of the young women in the house seem to fight over his affections, while the droll maid watches. There are several death threats, which the maid witnesses. Eventually the man gets shot and "Inspector Hound" miraculously appears.
All along, the two critics have been commenting about the play and talking among themselves. During the intermission of the play within the play, the phone on the "stage" begins reading and one of the critics, Birdboot, walks on stage and picks it up. The woman on the phone is his wife. Birdboot gets drawn into the play due to the stunning beauty of the mistress of the house, who immediately falls for him. Eventually, the second critic by the name of Moon is introduced to the scene.
I don't know how to describe the comedy in this play. Though understanding the play requires a lot of thought, there are often moments when the humor is apparent. I enjoyed both watching this play and performing the role of the maid, Mrs. Drudge, during it. I hope you enjoy it too.

Hound is a Real Hoot

I am a big fan of Tom Stoppard, and this play is the cornerstone of my affection for his work. The plot of what may clumsily be described as a play-within-a-play is fairly convoluted.
Two theater critics, Birdboot and Moon, are in attendance at the opening of a play which is a melodramatic re-hashing of every whodunit ever performed. Half-way through, Birdboot is drawn on-stage by a ringing phone, and the inner play begins again with Birdboot taking the part of the "mysterious stranger in our midst". After two scenes of Birdboot hitting on the actresses and improvising his lines, we come to the point in the play in which the character whose place Birdboot has taken is shot onstage. Birdboot falls to the ground dead, and the real murder mystery begins...
This long one-act is full of wit and verve. In the end, it is up to each member of the audience to put the pieces of the puzzle together and discover the true villain of the piece. A gem.

Lacks a real plot

I'll admit that there is some entertainment value in this work, but it is still only barely worth the read. There is hardly any plot, at least not any that it is possible for the reader to follow. The play seems to be a failed attempt at a complex and funny play. The key words in the above sentance are "failed attempt". The idea and concept of the play is clever and ingenious but it needs a lot of work. Reading the play feels almost like reading someone's notes for a work in progress. The basic plot outline is just starting to take shape but the actual story is missing. Perhaps this play would be better if it were seen performed than simply read. Maybe with the right directors and actors it could be funny and entertaining. However, I would not recommend that anybody take the time to read this book. If you want to know the story, ask someone who read it because what they tell you in a minute will be basically as much as the play presents to the reader in its entire length.

A wonderful way to share the miracle of Christ's birth

This beautifully illustrated children's book tells the tale of a cobbler waiting for a very special Christmas present. It has all the aspects of a great children's story--a poor little girl with no shoes who lives with her poor Grandmother, a rich Mayor and his spoiled daughter, a picturesque village filled with loving people, and a disgruntled cobbler angry at everybody's happiness. This book is espically good at telling the wonderful story of Christmas and Christ's birth. This book is a great reinforcement of the ideas found in the movie.

Red Boot's for Christmas is amazing book, that tells the true meaning of Christmas. It is very easy for children to understand and get the true meaning of what is going on.
It is about a poor woman who pleades with a shoe maker to make her grandaughter a pair of shoes for Christmas because she has none. The shoe maker refuses to do it, then changes his mind because of events that occur through out the book. The book also has beautiful illustrations in it , that keep you fixed on the pages

About the Author
Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri in 1888. He was educated at Harvard, at the Sorbonne in Paris, and at Merton College, Oxford. His early poetry was profoundly influenced by the French symbolists, especially Baudelaire and Laforgue. In his academic studies he specialised in philosophy and logic. His doctoral thesis was on F. H. Bradley. He settled in England in 1915, the year in which he married Vivienne Haigh-Wood and also met his contemporary Ezra Pound for the first time. After teaching for a year or so he joined Lloyds Bank in the City of London in 1917, the year in which he published his first volume, Prufrock and Other Observations. In 1919 Poems was hand-printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. His first collection of essays, The Sacred Wood, appeared in 1920. His most famous work, The Waste Land, was published in 1922, the same year as James Joyce's Ulysses. The poem was included in the first issue of his journal The Criterion, which he founded and edited. Three years later he left the bank to become a director of Faber & Gwyer, later Faber & Faber. His Poems 1909-25 was one of the original titles published by Geoffrey Faber's new firm, and the basis of his standard Collected Poems 1909-1962. In 1927 he was received into the Church of England and also became a British citizen. Ash Wednesday was published at Easter 1930. His masterpiece Four Quartets began with 'Burnt Norton' in 1936, continued with 'East Coker' in 1940, 'The Dry Salvages' in 1941 and 'Little Gidding' in 1942. The separate poems were gathered together as one work in 1943. Eliot's writing for the theatre began with the satirical 'Sweeney Agonistes' fragments. In 1934 he wrote the London churches' pageant play 'The Rock', the choruses from which are preserved in Collected Poems, and the next year he was commissioned by the Canterbury Festival to write Murder in the Cathedral, about the martyrdom of St Thomas a Beckett. The Family Reunion followed in 1939, when he also published his children's classic, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the jacket drawn by Eliot himself. (The Possum was Eliot's alias among friends). He later wrote three more verse plays, all of which were premiered at the Edinburgh Festival: The Cocktail Party, The Confidential Clerk and The Elder Statesman. A film of Murder in the Cathedral was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 1951. Eliot's most important literary criticism is collected in Selected Essays 1917-1932, which he enlarged in 1951. There are a number of other volumes of lectures and essays, among them The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism, For Lancelot Andrewes, On Poetry and Poets, and two works of social criticism - The Idea of a Christian Society and Notes Towards the Definition of Culture. Eliot was appointed to the Order of Merit in January 1948 and in the Autumn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He married for the second time in 1957, to Valerie Fletcher. Eliot died in January 1965. There is a memorial to him in Westminster Abbey, beside those to Tennyson and Browning. His ashes are in St Michael's Church, East Coker, the Somerset village from which his ancestor Andrew Eliot emigrated to America in 1667. After his death his widow edited the long-lost original manuscript of the The Waste Land and a volume of his letters. She also commissioned editions of his early poems Inventions of a March Hare and his Clark and Turnbull lectures The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats provided the lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber's dance musical Cats, which has been performed all over the world for the past 25 years.

Modest and elusive in its rhetoric, but very important in its argument

It is quite telling that the Amazon.com review material includes the line, “The book has been viewed as a critique of postwar Europe and a defense of conservatism and Christianity.” It is that, of course, but the comment suggests that Eliot’s intentions are somewhat elusive or underplayed, as if he wished to hover about the surface and allow deeper meanings to emerge upon later reflection.

The book (a mere 120+ pp.) is indeed elusive in its argument. It is not a detailed, reasoned, sequential summoning of evidence. It is more of a phenomenology of culture, a set of observations, with a few desultory footnotes and an occasional reference to a local report.

The outlines of his thought are, however, clear. First and foremost, culture is inextricable from religion. If religion disappears utterly the culture is lost and we must proceed through an era or eras of barbarism before we can somehow begin again. We talk about culture in many ways and in many contexts. There is the panoply of material culture, e.g.—our foods, our dress, our signage; there is the pivotal role played by our language and religion; the culture of the individual, the group and the society. There are the contributory elements to our culture—the culture of other nations, the counterculture within our own culture, and so on.

Eliot takes a Blakean stance, arguing that we need a certain amount of friction to sustain our culture. We must be challenged by alternative thought and alternative traditions. We must constantly renew our culture through these challenges. There is a good bit of ‘golden mean’ rhetoric. We should avoid a monolithic culture just as we should avoid a splintering and leveling of all cultural elements. We should be wary of ‘planning’ a culture, something that is impossible anyway, because the culture that would undergird a ‘plan’ is already there, even if it is not immediately apparent.

Eliot feels most strongly the traditional cultures of the Greeks, Romans and Jews which intertwine with Christianity to produce the cultures of Europe in general and England, specifically (though England is always in need of the contributions and challenges offered by the Irish, the Scots, and the Welsh). Clearly, in his heart of hearts, he hopes for the perpetuation of a Christian culture and an established social order, but he understands the modern threats to faith and he thinks of the social order as a fluid entity in which some will excel and others not, but one which permits and encourages the success of the previously marginalized.

Basically, we have a great poet and intellectual who is fundamentally Christian and conservative making the best case that he can for a culture and social order which will avoid some of the grand mistakes of the past but not succumb to the significant threats that were so apparent just after the war.

Many of these threats continue today and there are moments in which Eliot’s argument becomes quite explicit and quite prescient. For example: “the ideal of an educational system which would automatically sort out everyone according to his native capacities is unattainable in practice; and if we made it our chief aim, would disorganise society and debase education. It would disorganise society, by substituting for classes, élites of brains, or perhaps only of sharp wits. Any educational system aiming at a complete adjustment between education and society will tend both to restrict education to what will lead to success in the world, and to restrict success in the world to those persons who have been good pupils of the system. The prospect of a society ruled and directed only by those who have passed certain examinations or satisfied tests devised by psychologists is not reassuring . . . “ (p. 101).

Bottom line: this is a trenchant discussion by a great poet and significant thinker, but a discussion that is a bit elusive in its modesty and in its awareness of the weight of contrary opinion represented by national socialism, communism, secularism and the general weariness with class and unearned hierarchy.

Eliot begins by conceding that the subject of his study “involves the risk of error at every moment” and is “so difficult that I am not sure I grasp it myself except in flashes, or that I comprehend all its implications.” He defines culture as “not merely the sum of several activities, but a way of life” of people living together in one place. It is “made visible in their arts, in their social system, in their habits and customs, in their religion.” He warns the reader about the danger of committing two errors: “that of regarding religion and culture as separate things between which there is a relation, and that of identifying [equating] religion and culture.” Culture and religion are separate and distinct, but they are intricately interwoven.
Eliot breaks culture down into three classes: the individual, the group and whole society. The culture of the individual is “dependent upon the culture of a group or class and that the culture of the group or class is dependent upon the culture of the whole society to which that group or class belongs.” He begins his study with culture at the whole society level, setting out to avoid
The material organization of a nation is inextricably linked with its spiritual life. In the context of Europe, if the spiritual organization dies, “then what you will organize will not be Europe, but merely a mass of human beings speaking several different languages.” “In the most primitive societies no clear distinction is visible between religious and non-religious activities; and that as we proceed to examine the more developed societies, we perceive a greater distinction and finally contrast and opposition, between these activities.”
The culture of the West has been formed through common conceptions that have been handed down from the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome and Israel. These legacies have given way to common conceptions of private and public morality, a conception of Roman law and common standards of art and literature. It is the duty of men of letters throughout Europe to pass on this culture, unadulterated by political motives, to future generations by producing “those excellent works which mark a superior civilization.”

About the Author
Dr. Raymond L. Hilgert was Professor of Management and Industrial Relations at the Olin School of Business of Washington University. He graduated from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and received his Master's and Doctor's degrees from Washington University. His business experience included management positions at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and a market research position with an advertising firm. Dr. Hilgert taught at Washington University for more 35 years, where he served as an Assistant Dean and Director of Management Development Programs. He published approximately 90 articles in management, business, and academic journals and co-authored five books on human resources management, supervision, and collective bargaining. Dr. Hilgert was a member of the Academy of Management, the Industrial Relations Research Association, the Society for Human Resource Management, the American Compensation Association, and the American Management Association. He participated in or directed numerous management, supervisory, and business ethics programs and seminars. As an arbitrator certified by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, Dr. Hilgert decided more than 550 grievance-arbitration cases. He held the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) accreditation from the Personnel Accreditation Institute and received numerous teaching awards from students at Washington University.

Three Fold Look at Christ With Us At Work

A philosophy/ethics prof, a pastor, and a business executive join to produce a small, but masterful delving into the area of Christian business ethics.
As Luther was major influence of the restoration of work as a pleasing service to God (also see the fine work, "Your Work Matters to God), these Lutherans present the topic from each of their expertise and background.
Sprinkled throughout are Case Studies, Bible Studies, and Questions for Answering and Discussion, making this a worthy individual or Bible Study group read.
Their approach and admonitions are concise and Biblical, and at the same time, cognizant of the implications in the practical, realitistic world of the "dog eat dog" world that most professions are.
Taking Christ with us where we spend a great deal of time at work is the significant theme, and provides much for one to think and pray and apply, all the time seeking to be pleasing to our God and of service to our employers, employees and customers.
An important work in this age of pragmatism, realtivism and pluralism, while at the same time seeking not to develop attack Christians who flaunt a Moral Majority type seize and capture mentality. Well balanced and written guide for the Christian exploring how to be of further service to the Good Lord.

A book that you can use as reference guide

Christian Ethics in the Workplace is a relatively quick read; however, it is not light reading. Hilgert, Lochhaas and Truesdell detail real-life situations where the right choice isn't as neat as clean as many other books would imply. They then provide guidelines for logical, systematic consideration of conflicts from a Christian perspective.

This book would be an excellent gift for anyone moving into a supervisory position.
