The great master holds his readers spellbound as he discourses on the Biblical narrative and applies Scriptural truths to what happened in the past, to what is taking place in his own time, and to what is bound to occur in the future.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Luther continues his study on Abraham

My trek through Luther's Works continues with Volume 3. Here he covers Chapters 15 through 20 of Genesis - thus this volume is all about Abraham.

I do find it curious how hard Luther works to see the Patriarchs always in "a good light". Now prior to Abraham, we actually have very little about the Patriarchs that are mentioned - but after Chapter 11 that changes. Whilst in now way is Luther claiming Abraham to be sinless - far from it, rather I think he is giving Abraham more credit than the text would seem to allow. Of course, this may be more a reflection of my own cynicism :)

I also find it curious how much of the Gospel, Luther believes that the Patriarchs know. I don't know if there is something in between Allegory and Exegesis, but this seems to be where Luther is, as he uses Abraham's (and Lot's) situation to expound on the situation he finds himself in.

However, I do find much wisdom in Luther's words, and this book like the two prior has given me much to dwell upon.

CBGB was to the raw music of punk what the Cavern Club was to the Beatles. At the center of this anecdotal history of the club where the Ramones, Blondie, Television, and Talking Heads got their start is owner Hilly Kristal, ex-Marine and ex-singer. His club took off in 1976, beginning as a dark, seedy joint in New York's Bowery and eventually focusing on the kind of music Debbie Harry of Blondie described as "The sicker and funnier the better." The book is short on analysis or even clear description of the music or the era, so the uninitiated reader may be baffled by references to hardcore music and slam dancing. THIS AIN'T NO DISCO The Story of CBGB. By RomanKozak. Photographs by Ebet Roberts. 143 pp. Boston: Faber & Faber.
BENEATH the Palace flophouse on the Bowery, a former derelict bar exists that now has its history written, complete with a scholarly discography. It's CBGB - mecca of punk rock and hard-core music. Roman Kozak, from 1976 to 1983 an editor of Billboard, takes us through the early days (in the mid-1970's) when the ''shock of the new'' included musical headliners such as the Ramones, Blondie, Television, Talking Heads and Patti Smith.
In reading this lively account, we find out that the owner, Hilly Kristal, slept in the back room for two years and even formed a moving company to help support the financially troubled bar. We discover that the initials CBGB-OMFUG stand for ''country, bluegrass, blues and other music for uplifting gourmandizers.'' Mr. Kristal originally intended his club to present country-and-western entertainers, but after the Mercer Arts Center collapsed, the new ''psycho-sexual'' rock-and-roll bands were desperately searching for a new performance space. Terry Ork, who managed Television, provided advice and connections that proved invaluable in getting the hot new groups to play at CBGB.
Everyone ages - even the new wave. The author uses the recollections of the musicians, their managers and the staffers to convey their special relationship with this funky bar. If keeping the plethora of names straight creates a small problem, the cast of characters listed in the front will help. For the most part, vivid anecdotes keep these reminiscences from bogging down. For example, we glimpse a show by the Plasmatics that featured ''a six-foot-six guitarist with a blue mohawk hairdo who wore a dress . . . mock executions, a shotgun . . . and other mayhem. After the band got more popular it would blow up automobiles onstage.''
So it goes - from the Ramones to the Plasmatics to the hard-core groups of the 80's. The young skinheads who flock to Sunday matinees form the current big scene. They slam-dance to hard-core music, and most aren't old enough to drink at the bar (anyone over 16 can be admitted). Who else would have them? The bums still panhandle outside and the bar is still seedy, but some of the underage kids who used to sneak in a few years ago are now performers themselves -among them, the popular group Murphy's Law. If you've ever had your eardrums blasted at CBGB, you will enjoy ''This Ain't No Disco.''

In addition to writing numerous essays and editorials, lectures, reviews, introductions and prefaces, his letters show Eliot involving himself wholeheartedly in the business of his new career as a publisher. His Ariel poems, "Journey of the Magi" (1927) and "A Song for Simeon" (1928) established a new manner and vision for the poet of "The Waste Land" and "The Hollow Men". These are also the years in which Eliot published two sections of an exhilaratingly funny, savage, jazz-influenced play-in-verse - "Fragment of a Prologue" and "Fragment of an Agon" - which were subsequently brought together as "Sweeney Agonistes". In addition, he struggled to translate the remarkable work "Anabase", by St. John Perse, which was to be a signal influence upon his own later poetry. This correspondence with friends and mentors vividly documents all the stages of Eliot's personal and artistic transformation during these crucial years, the continuing anxieties of his private life, and the forging of his public reputation.

The struggle for acceptance by an immigrant

My Son the fanatic is a short story of an immigrant from Pakistan. The underlying theme of this novel is the struggle of the asian immigrants face in an alien society which refuses to accept them, treat them as equals and the ways in which they deal with the alienation. There is a sharp contrast in the way Pervez and his son Farid deal with the sense of belonging and being a part of society.
With all the compromises and loses Pervez suffers in his migration; he appears to take them as a part of his experience and adventure of life; to him it seems to be worth the price. He mentions how better his life has been in comparison to having stayed back. He refuses to acknowledge the cold behavior of the local British.
His son Farid on the other hand seems to have considerable anger and is not disillusioned by the British cold behavior. He finds the society constraining, limiting and degrading and feels to be a victim in his country. Having been excluded he is tempted to exclude others. He finds comfort with his own people and gets attached towards Islam. Having been brought up in secular Britan , he would turn the to a form of belief that denies him the pleasure of society in which he lived. Having devoted his life to pleasure: the pleasure of sex, music, alcohol and friends; he detracts and spends time in abstinence; for in abstinence he felt strong.
Hanif in his short novel has touched the conflicts a lot of asian families feel having migrated to a foreign country. He has outlined the characters brilliantly and this is most certainly a very entertaining novel to read.

My oppinion is that this story shows the real life of many Father-Son-Relationships. In this story are shown many different Problems. For Example: Father-Son-Conflict,Problems for immigrants or living with an other culture. The story is written very good and I think many people can identify with this story. In Germany I think there are not so many people who know this Problems. This story can informate people about the problems which many other people have.

Great way to study the Bible

I used the Book as a daily devotional. I just took a section or two at a time. It was very enlightening. Written in an understandable way it helped with passages that were a little more difficult to understand by providing a little history surrounding the time. I am definitely going to read another one of the People's Bible Commentary Books.

A bouquet of allusions

Tom Stoppard loves multilayered writing and drama, creating comedy or even farce.
This play is an allusion to An Inspector Calls. It uses travesties, double or triple identities like Shakespeare in his comedies. It is a direct descendant of Samuel Beckett's absurd drama. It is an allusion to Murder by Death. It is thus a parody of many models and even a parody of a parody.
But it is also built with a mirror projecting the audience onto the stage, then projecting this projected audience into the play, and the actors into this projected audience of critics. This is again a multifaceted mirror.
Finally no one is true, no one is false, no truth is true, and no truth is false. All theories are purely abstract, absurd and abscond fantasies. The last layer of parody and criticism is directed at the police of course as for the plot of the play, and the critics as for the performance of the play and the play itself.
Stoppard is a hard hitting satirist cast loose onto the public, the critics and society. Catch out of it what you can. And nothing if you can't catch anything. Too bad for you. Stoppard will not cry.

Fine existential humor

Tom Stoppard's convoluted farce plays with identity and the nature of reality. There is a play within a play--a marvelous send-up of drawing room mysteries--and a couple of drama critics who comment on the stage action in rather oblique ways that often make it seem that they may actually be speaking of their relations with the actors playing the characters. Then they enter the action of the play and everyone seems compelled to remain in character. I suppose one could read a lot into this, such as the nature of the roles we play in society or the degree to which the reality we experience is deterministic or preordained, but frankly I just enjoyed the humor. It's too clever by half to be a meaningful statement about the human condition, but just witty enough to be a terrific comedy.

Very interesting

This book is a collection of direct quotations from contemporary references (a treat to read), offered in the original german, along with translations and the authors comments and deductions. It contains a number of musical examples, demonstrating Bach's fingering principles and a chapter on Bach's footwork on the organ. A very interesting book for anyone playing Bach, or indeed any baroque music, on the harpsichord or organ. It is a short (but dense) read, only 40 pages not counting the TOC and appendices. The book itself has the size and feel of sheet music (slim keel, large pages) and fits comfortably on an instruments music stand for study.

Highly recommended...

A scholarly but readable work based on primary historical sources. The original German is provided, along with fine, thoughtful translations. I am not a Bach scholar, but if you are interested in finding out what can be learned about Bach's keyboard technique from the historical sources, this little book is probably indispensable.

The next best thing to having him as a teacher

This book uses primary sources to reconstruct how Bach sat at the keyboard and played, and it shows how much it is impossible to extrapolate backward from present-day piano technique to Bach's own harpsichord and organ playing, but gives good ideas on how to achieve some of his effects.

About the Author
Lawrence Durrell was born in 1912 in India. He attended the Jesuit College at Darjeeling and St Edmund's School, Canterbury. His first literary work, The Black Book, appeared in Paris in 1938. His first collection of poems, A Private Country, was published in 1943, followed by the three Island books: Prospero's Cell, Reflections on a Marine Venus, about Rhodes, and Bitter Lemons, his account of life in Cyprus. Durrell's wartime sojourn in Egypt led to his masterpiece, The Alexandria Quartet, which he completed in southern France where he settled permanently in 1957. Between the Quartet and The Avignon Quintet he wrote the two-decker Tunc and Nunquam. His oeuvre includes plays, a book of criticism, translations, travel writing, and humorous stories about the diplomatic corps. Caesar's Vast Ghost, his reflections on the history and culture of Provence, including a late flowering of poems, appeared a few days before his death in Sommieres in 1990.

Sublimely Ridiculous!

As I was reading "Esprit de Corps," I realized that it had been a very long time since I read a book that evoked more than silent amusement or even a transient smirk. Durrell's razor-sharp prose, which moves effortlessly between the sublime and the ridiculous, caused me not only to chuckle and chortle but also to cackle and croak with hiccups of hilarity. Written in 1957, an era when humor was untrammeled by the shackles of political correctness, "Esprit" lampoons life in the corps diplomatique in Tito's Yugoslavia. Sparing no nation, Durrell punctures pretension wherever he finds it. Much of the pretentiousness pours out of the mouth of Antrobus, a retired British diplomat, who regales the narrator, a press attaché, with stories from `those happy days passed in foreign capitals "lying abroad" for our country.'

If you have ever lived any length of time in a foreign country and if you enjoy the British sense of wry humor, you will certainly enjoy this book.

Hilarious

This slim volume carries nine of Durrell's brilliantly funny sketches about diplomatic life in Communist Yugoslavia. From the "Ghost Train", a terrifying socialist-inspired train ride from Belgrade to Zagreb through "Call of the Sea", a side-splitting account of a diplomatic party on a wayward raft floating down the Danube, Durrell's accounts can easily be about life in a modern day American or European embassy. The eccentric characters ring true in any age. The prose is as dryly humorous as a New Yorker cartoon. This is Durrell at his comic best.

Great light comic entertainment

I came across an old paperback edition of Stiff Upper Lip and Esprit de Corps--they were not what I had expected of Durrell, but I was so happy to find them. Today, both of these collections would no doubt be considered terribly politically incorrect, but I loved them. Acerbic wit, nicely drawn characters, or rather cariacatures. Perfect light entertainment a few years ago, now somewhat poignant given the conflicts and atrocities in the region during the last few years.

Pretty Darn Good

What a great script! I'm surprised so many locals missed out on the humor of this film. Its easy to see the Coen brothers have a great vision what their films will be while they write. To the Minnesotans and North Dakotans who were harmed as a result of the "yah" stereotype, get over it. The Coens are the best thing to come out of the area since Lawrence Welk.

Love it or hate it, it's a darn good script.

This screenplay started with the premise, "Wouldn't it be cool if you put a guy through a wood chipper?" and snowballed (no pun intended, honestly) from there, according to the Coens. I think that's part of the amazing originality of this script. Why start with a plot? The storyline is so bizarre and non-linear that it at first you might be inclined to believe the movie actually is based on a true story. Twists, turns, and laugh-out-loud dialogue (for an extra laugh, watch the creative dubbing on TNT sometime: "frugal," "frozen," "flipping," etc.) make this a script worth reading, and well worth its Oscar. And to the Dakotans that have issues with the stereotypical accent: get over it. I'm from North Carolina, and I'm tired of you people whining about how all people in your region don't talk the same way. We southerners don't all talk like rednecks, but neither do we get uptight over movies that tend to forget that. But I digress. This is an excellent peice of writing, as is the rest of the Coen brothers' library. "Raising Arizona" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" are also wonderful; I recommend them.

A great story about greed and its consequences.

A fabulous screenplay and an even better movie. Anyone who enjoyed Pulp Fiction or Jacky Brown will like FARGO. Frances McDormand plays a bright policewoman trying to maintain a normal and quiet life with husband Norm. GREAT bad guys you will love to hate. A must see!!!!
