Contains wonderful children's songs.

I really like the children's songs with music included, since so much of the current curriculum just gives the words to a song and sets them to a common melody such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", "Old MacDonald", etc. They also are accurate in their presentation of Bible truths. I use it every Sunday and Wednesday evening.

Great book for brass history

When I ordered this book I was expecting something that closely followed the form Baines had used in his Woodwind Instruments and Their History. This was not to be the case. Instead, it is a detailed history of the brass family from prehistoric time to the modern valved era. This is not quite as exhaustive of a book as I was looking for (something that dealt with modern valved brass). With all that said it is still a marvelous book and full of usefull information.

Self-contained Penelope is not waiting for her Odysseus; frustrated Mrs. Sisyphus is married to a workaholic; Pygmalion's statue, tired of being pestered by her groping suitor, "changed tack/ grew warm, like candle wax/ kissed back"--and after sex gets dumped. But while Duffy's revisionist dramatic monologues are rife with clever twists, this material has been well mined by such poets as Alta, Margaret Atwood and Alicia Ostriker. Even references to Viagra, sheep-cloning and Monica Lewinsky seem an updating of Transformations (1971), Anne Sexton's deadpan fairy tales studded with cultural references, with the poems trapped in a similarly polarized conception of gender relations. Thus Thetis is brutalized in a new way each time she changes form--man is cross-bow to her albatross, charmer to her snake, fisherman to her mermaid--and to Queen Herod, the Christ child is simply a threat to her infant girl: he's "The Wolf. The Rip. The Rake. The Rat./The Heartbreaker. The Ladykiller. Mr. Right." The luckiest in love is Mrs. Beast, married to a devoted creature that's hung like a mule, and just as hardworking: "And if his snot and trotters fouled/ my damask sheets, why, then, he'd wash them. Duffy's dramatic monologues expressing the perspectives of famous men's wives resemble the potato chips in the old ad campaign, for it is hard to read just one. "Mrs. Aesop" tells us what an excruciating bore the old moralist was. "Mrs. Sisyphus" bitterly complains about her hubby's job. "Frau Freud" reveals no penis envy at all. Yet, not all these wives' tales are funny. "Mrs. Lazarus" is as horrified as he by his resurrection. "Circe," after the disappointing experience with Odysseus, says she has lost her appetite for men, but not for "sizzling pig." "Mrs. Midas" yearns for his touch again, even as she rues marrying such a thoughtless, greedy man. And then there is the startling allegory of the power of poetry that Duffy makes out of "Little Red-Cap" (aka Little Red Riding Hood). Although intentionally more humorous than Anne Sexton's fairy tale retellings or Ann Stanford's re-envisionings of Greek myths, Duffy's takes on the stuff of legends are as richly rewarding as those much-admired poems. In "The World's Wife," Duffy deftly reworks tales from myths, fables, the bible, popular culture, literature and history. Some popular stories are reexamined through the eyes of a female witness, as with "Pilate's Wife," "Mrs. Darwin, " "Mrs. Sisyphus" and "Anne Hathaway." Others are modernized; In "Mrs. Faust," Faust and his wife are a pair of yuppies collecting degrees, computers and cell phones. A few stories, like "Queen Kong", are reimagined with a female protagonist replacing the male. The poetry is as diverse as the personae, with voices ranging from lingering, dreamy and dramatic to hard, clipped and succinct.

The World's Wife lets previously unheard women speak. Their voices are not always what readers expect from a lyric speaker, for how often is deep emotion examined through rhyming slang for tits, or the nicknames for a penis? Yet when Duffy calls a modern wife frustrated by her husband's discovery of Viagra "Mrs. Rip Van Winkle," or a contemporary-voiced woman whose husband works mindlessly and ceaselessly "Mrs. Sisyphus," Duffy reveals that their personal struggles are not theirs alone. Their troubles have resonance, and echo through history, literature and myth---even though in the past it may have been left unspoken.

As volumes of poetry go, The World's Wife is very tightly-themed: each poem is a monologue in the persona of a woman married (or otherwise attached) to a more famous man. The men are more usually from myth or fairy tale (Mrs Sisyphus, Mrs Beast) than from history, although five are biblical and one or two are from history as recent as the 1960s (I think The Devil's Wife may be a portrait of Myra Hindley). Duffy's approach to these monologues is almost absolutely consistent: the women express contempt, irritation, resentment and sorrow for the foolishness and egotism of their partners. Mrs Quasimodo desecrates her husband's beloved bells by fouling them with her own urine; both Penelope and Mrs Lazarus are discomfited by their husbands' return; Mrs Tiresias seeks solace in lesbianism. Only occasionally (as with Anne Hathaway) does the wife feel real love for her husband. The subject-matter, thus paraphrased, looks gloomy and bitter, but in fact these poems are entertaining and very likeable. It is quite important to these pieces that they are funny - and we do laugh because of the constantly-perceived clash between lofty, remote, sacred men and contemporary-sounding, slangy, immediate women. Duffy's language is exactly right for her project. Rhythmically it is strongly pulsing; even more important is the function of rhyme and half-rhyme (the latter perhaps this poet's single-most impressive talent). Reinforcing the wilful, aggressive quality of the rhetoric is Duffy's aptitude for witty puns involving cliches and hackneyed figures of speech (Eurydice is 'out of this world'). At the same time, however, the language is kept aerated and three-dimensional by beautiful off-the-cuff metaphors ('a snapdragon gargling a bee'). I think all this is extremely well-judged poetry; it is rich and confident and if it lacks subtlety, irony or mysteriousness, that is in the nature of its unusually rhetorical mission.

Wise Blood is a comedy with a fierce, Old Testament soul. Flannery O'Connor has no truck with such newfangled notions as psychology. Driven by forces outside their control, her characters are as one-dimensional--and mysterious--as figures on a frieze. Hazel Motes, for instance, has the temperament of a martyr, even though he spends most of the book trying to get God to go away. As a child he's convinced that "the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin." When that doesn't work, and when he returns from Korea determined "to be converted to nothing instead of evil," he still can't go anywhere without being mistaken for a preacher. (Not that the hat and shiny glare-blue suit help.) No matter what Hazel does, Jesus moves "from tree to tree in the back of his mind, a wild ragged figure motioning him to turn around and come off into the dark..."

Adrift after four years in the service, Hazel takes a train to the city of Taulkinham, buys himself a "rat-colored car," and sets about preaching on street corners for the Church Without Christ, "where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way." Along the way he meets Enoch Emery, who's only 18 years old but already works for the city, as well the blind preacher Asa Hawks and his illegitimate daughter, Sabbath Lily. (Her letter to an advice column: "Dear Mary, I am a bastard and a bastard shall not enter the kingdom of heaven as we all know, but I have this personality that makes boys follow me. Do you think I should neck or not?") Subsequent events involve a desiccated, centuries-old dwarf--Gonga the Giant Jungle Monarch--and Hazel's nemesis, Hoover Shoats, who starts the rival Church of Christ Without Christ. If you think these events don't end happily, you might be right.

Wise Blood is a savage satire of America's secular, commercial culture, as well as the humanism it holds so dear ("Dear Sabbath," Mary Brittle writes back, "Light necking is acceptable, but I think your real problem is one of adjustment to the modern world. Perhaps you ought to re-examine your religious values to see if they meet your needs in Life.") But the book's ultimate purpose is Religious, with a capital R--no metaphors, no allusions, just the thing itself in all its fierce glory. When Hazel whispers "I'm not clean," for instance, O'Connor thinks he is perfectly right. For readers unaccustomed to holding low comedy and high seriousness in their heads at the same time, all this can come as something of a shock. Who else could offer an allegory about free will, redemption, and original sin right alongside the more elemental pleasure of witnessing Enoch Emery dress up in a gorilla suit? Nobody else, that's who. And that's OK. More than one Flannery O'Connor in this world might show us more truth than we could bear. --Mary Park

His Hazel is nasty, nasally, and angry; his Enoch Emery boasts a congested twang; and the entire cast is likewise brought to life by Pinchot's precise and perceptive characterizations and his brilliant evocation of O'Conner's grotesqueries. A Great American novel

Reading Flannery O'Connor is not for the faint of heart. While this novel can be read for entertainment - it IS entertaining - protagonist Hazel Motes is looking for something TRUE, and he looks in all the wrong places. O'Connor employs a humorous style to show the follies we all embrace, while clearly having compassion for the characters who fail so valiantly. Or do they fail? The reader will have to decide.

Reminds me of a 14-yr-old trying to write a novel.

Not good at all. The way this is written reminds me of a freshman girl in high school making her first attempt at writing a novel, and trying to be "controversial" at the same time. I don't have anything against 14-yr-old girls, but they shouldn't be writing novels. Nice try, but epic fail.

Stunning beyond words. Creepy, unsettling, religious and nihilistic southern gothic. I recommend this book to anyone with an existential sense of humor and no qualms about being shocked and confused. This is a masterpiece.

Actor Lee Marvin's widow has written a touching book that concentrates on their years together, though she mentions nearly every performance, from his coffee-throwing hoodlum in The Big Heat through his Oscar-winning gunslinger in Cat Ballou and beyond. Pamela Feeley and Lee Marvin fell in love in 1945, when she was 15 and he was a 21-year-old veteran; they parted in 1948 when he left Woodstock, New York, to pursue his acting career. In 1970, both divorced with children, they met again and married. Instead of the usual "and then he starred in" chronology, Marvin offers chapters on the couple's mutual passions, like fishing and Australia, plus 200 pages on the infamous 1979 palimony suit filed by ex-girlfriend Michelle Triola (who, unsurprisingly, comes across as a vengeful nut). Peculiar though this structure is, it works. As the author moves backwards and forwards in time--opening with Marvin's 1987 burial in Arlington National Cemetery with full marine corps honors, and zigzagging from their youthful romance to their marriage, his war service, the palimony trial, and the final years of ill health--a moving portrait emerges. She is frank about Marvin's drinking and other peccadilloes, but her loving account stresses his generosity, loyalty, and old-fashioned sense of honor. --Wendy Smith

Lee: Amazing Actor - Most Insecure Man

Lee Marvin is, by all accounts, one of the greatest actors of all time. Because of my fascination with him and his films I have picked up many books about him: The Donald Zec biography, The biography by his first wife Betty, the newest release "Point Blank", and now this one. I find that is it sometimes a tremendous let down to really "get to know" an amazing actor because sometimes you find details and truths that are unpleasant. But these facts do nothing to deminish the acting ability of this great man. However, the choices Lee made in his personal life, namely with women, are absolutely atrocious. He chooses weak, unintelligent, deeply insecure, terribly needy (and often unattractive) women to share his life with. If each of the main women in his life (2 wives and Michelle Triola) don't have all of the qualities I've listed above, they each have at least a couple of them. But since this is Pam's book, let's stick with her for the moment. She is self serving, manipulative, and a first class snob. (Triola was perhaps the most unintelligent person on the face of the earth as her testimony in the court transcripts in this book can attest) but Pam is a shrew. Some examples written by her in this book: 1. Pam washes her hands when a poor manual laborer shakes her hand on the set of Pocket Money - the laborer said he worked "graveyard" and although he meant the shift, Pam immediately rushed to wash off his touch. I wonder what she thought she could catch if he actually DID work in a graveyard? 2. Pam is disgusted by Lee's acceptance of a poor child's request to join him for lunch at his home amid poverty while on the set of "Pocket Money" and then she's astounded when the child's house is actually well kept (I guess she didn't know that poor people can have pride in their surroundings.) 3. Pam expected (and was disappointed when she didn't receive it) a new car or emensely expensive piece of jewelry on their first Christmas after getting married. 4. Pam manipulated Lee to omit his own children out of their inheritances (and his life) by making sure her children were first, foremost, and most present in his life. These examples are just to name a few. Lee married this woman as way to get Michelle Triola off of his back, but it's a rather weak man who would go to these lengths and allow the Michelle situation to go on for SIX YEARS! Also, in the newest publication "Point Blank" we hear that at the end of Lee's life, he tried desperately to get rid of Pam. (I can't blame the poor guy) I will never change my tune about his talent, but personally, in spite of his physical beauty and his overwhemling talent, this guy was weak and unappealing - just like all the women in his life (although his first wife Betty is clearly the best of this lowly bunch) A tip: don't read too much about Lee - just watch his talent in films - he's never bad - always intense - always the greatest...on film.

LEE MARVIN BIO? DON'T BE FOOLED!

The title of this book is Lee: A Romance, as if to suggest it is a biography of legendary actor Lee Marvin and the love life the author spent with him. That's NOT what this book is. It is the author's autobiography and her years with and without the famous movie star. His most influential period in film history, the mid and late 60s, is completely ignored. Instead we read about Pame Marvin's countless other relationships! Don't be fooled by this book -- a great biography on the life of Lee Marvin has to exist some time but it certainly is NOT this book!!

WHAT AN INTERESTING AND WONDERFUL STORY OF A TRUE WAR HERO THAT WENT ON TO BECOME A SCREEN LEGEND. PAMELA MARVIN SHOWS LEE WITH HIS GREAT SMILES, ABILITY AND,.....HIS WARTS. About the Author
Benjamin Britten (1913 - 76) began composing at the age of six, and his first compositions were published while he was still a student. He made a living through writing music for documentary films in the 1930s, beginning a collaboration with W H Auden which continued when he and his life-long partner, the singer Peter Pears, moved to the USA in 1939. Returning in 1942 he began work on his operatic masterpiece, Peter Grimes, the first of the many operas that dominated his career.His greatest public success came with the War Requiem in 1962; he died four years after the completion of his final opera, Death in Venice.

Superb Biography in Letters and Notes

This is volume II of the biography Britten asked Mitchell to write, asking him to "Tell the truth about me and Peter." So it is the story of a gay marriage before being gay was even legal, let alone honoured in any way. In this volume, Britten advances his career in America, receiving commissions from (among others) the one-handed pianist Wittgenstein and the Japanese Imperial Government (on the eve of WW II!)Pears begins to study seriously, as he will continue to do into his fifties, to keep building his voice to meet the demands of Britten's compositions. They face the complications of their status as conscientious objectors and vacillate about returning to England. Early in this American journey, Britten and Pears fell in love and made a committment that lasted until Britten's death. The exchange of letters between them is so intimate the reader feels invasive, until reminded that Pears, who has been ill-served by certain biographers, wanted them published so the true nature of their loving relationship would be made known. At length, inspired by an article by E.M. Forster, they returned home where Britten wrote Peter Grimes and so began to revitalise English opera. This volume includes the founding of the English Opera Group and the Aldeburgh Festival. It is dedicated to Elizabeth Mayer, their patron in America, who gave them a home and family and invaluable support in this doubt-filled time.

This book is a marvellous account of hunter-gatherer culture, gleaned from years of living and hunting with the Inuits of the Arctic and the salmon-fishing tribes in the Canadian Northwest. Brody explores the frontiers between hunters and farmers, and shows us how the encounter between radically different ways of being in the world is at the core of human history. He travels through exquisite landscapes of ice and snow, with people who know the land as part of their selves. Posing the question, 'Why did the farmer triumph over the hunter-gatherer?', Brody finds answers in a variety of places, among them the Book of Genesis, the great creation myth at the centre of the agriculturalist view of the world. This is a book that invites the reader to embark on a series of expeditions, into the territories of hunter-gatherers, and into radical ideas about what it means to be human in the present, and what it could mean in the future.

About the Author
Hugh Brody was born in 1943 and educated at Trinity College, Oxford. He taught social anthropology at Queen's University, Belfast. He is an Honorary Associate of the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, and an Associate of the School for Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto.$$$In the 1970s he worked with the Canadian Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, and then with Inuit and Indian organisations, mapping hunter-gatherer territories and researching Land Claims and indigenous rights in many parts of Canada. He was an adviser to the Mackenzie Pipeline Inquiry, a member of the World Bank's famous Morse Commission and chairman of the Snake River Independent Review, all of which took him to the encounter between large-scale development and indigenous communities. Since 1997 he has worked with the South African San Institute on Bushman history and land rights in the Southern Kalahari.
