About the Author
Ronald Harwood came to England from South Africa in 1951 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He was an actor for seven years, and began writing in 1960. Since then he has written numerous plays for the stage, including 'After the Lions', 'Tramway Road', 'Interpreters', 'Another Time', 'Quartet', 'Equally Divided' and 'Mahler's Conversion', and an adaptation of Chekhov's 'Ivanov'. He also wrote the screenplay for the film of his West End and Broadway hit, The Dresser, which received five Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Screenplay, and the screenplay for The Pianist, the Palme d'Or-winning movie directed by Roman Polanski.

Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) an out of work novelist (Westerns) is offered a job in post war Vienna by his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). When Holly arrives he finds he is late for Harry's funeral. The authorities are besmirching Harry's memory. Harry's girl (Alida Valli) after hearing of a mysterious third man at Harry's car accident suggested that Harry's death may not have been an accident.

Now it is up to Holly to clear Harry's name. We may be in for a few surprises.

This handbook provides easy access to information needed by actors or students preparing a monolog drawn from Shakespeare. Acting coach Silverbush and actor Plotkin offer synopses of Shakespeare's plays and cover his use of iambic pentameter, poetic and rhetorical elements, and historical and social context. They also include the full, modernized text of 150 monologs, arranged by genre. The monologs are identified by play title, act and scene, name of character speaking, character's gender and age range, and frequency of use in auditions. Brief introductions place the monologs in context, and extensive glosses of unfamiliar vocabulary are followed by an analysis aimed at helping an actor interpret the text. Unbelievably useful and clear.

As a young actor currently studying Shakespeare in an acting conservatory, this book perfectly compliments the tools I am being taught.

It is full of information written in a clear, efficient manner and is never patronizing to the reader. The tone has a lighteness and joy that invites the actor into the world of classical text and removes any stodgy stereotypes that may surround the poet's work.

I recommend this book to any actor who is looking for some less performed Shakespeare monologues and comes equipped with an incredibley useful guide to understanding the plays themselves, as well as what is going on specifically with each monologue.

I would buy it as a gift for all of my acting friends.

Simply the best book ever to analyze Shakespeare's monologues: incisive, illuminating, deeply intelligent, always entertaining and sometimes brilliant. Experienced actors as well as those new to the craft will find this immeasurably helpful, and they will have plenty of company. Anyone who appreciates Shakespeare's words and work will find this wonderful book an oasis in a literary desert too often filled with mirages.

"Dancing...the very heart of life and all its hopes."

Set in Donegal in 1936, during Ireland's change from an agrarian to a more industrial economy, this screenplay of Brian Friel's haunting ensemble drama, on which Frank McGuinness collaborated, tells the story of five sisters and their priest brother in the rural community of Ballybeg on the eve of the harvest festival of Lughnasa. Forty-ish Kate, who sees herself "in charge," is the only real wage earner in the family. Rigid, severe, and completely lacking in humor, she believes pagan celebrations, such as Lughnasa, which provide fun and enjoyment in the countryside, are "uncivilized."

Her brother Jack, the priest, however, on furlough from his missionary work in Uganda, is now virtually a pagan himself. His work has shown him the need of the poor for happiness, dancing, and community celebration, even if it is not church-sanctioned. The other Mundy sisters help illustrate the ironic chasm between Kate's attitudes and those of Fr. Jack. Maggie, the fun-loving, free-spirited, and most humorous of the sisters, constantly bursts into song and dance and longs to go to the town dance. Christina feels no shame whatever about her son, a love-child, and thoroughly enjoys the summer visit of his father, Gerry Evans, with whom she dances spontaneously.

Aggie and Rose, who earn small wages knitting gloves, work tirelessly as the family's sad, "unpaid servants," constantly chafing against Kate's imposition of her own values on them. When the local priest fails to rehire Kate because of Fr. Jack's apparent paganism, the family is devastated, but it is at that moment that they recognize the need to celebrate life itself.

The message in this screenplay is weaker than in the stage play, with much less criticism directed at the "clan of the round collar" and its harsh edicts. Kate is less hostile in the film, and the fates of Aggie and Rose are withheld until the end, for dramatic reasons, and not revealed early, as in the play. Fr. Jack's paganism, regarded as a mental aberration in the screenplay, is treated empathetically in the play, which, though dark, is ultimately a joyful celebration of life itself, a life not bound by organized religion. The film, perhaps in the interest of not offending its audience, suppresses this point of view, presenting a less assertive, and perhaps less realistic, viewpoint. n Mary Whipple

The Enigma of Werner Herzog

There is no shortage of journal articles on the films of Werner Herzog, but sadly articles from academic journals remain generally inaccessible to the general public. It is somewhat ironic that Herzog has spent his career raging against the stifling and stultifying pursuit of film as a theoretical and academic discourse, yet his cinema has largely achieved its prominent position due to the laudatory position he is held in by the academy. This is just one of many paradoxes that lie at the heart of his cinema (another is Herzog's disavowal of political readings of his films, but in some cases such as "Even Dwarf's Started Small" this is impossible). These are just some of the areas Herzog discusses with Editor Paul Cronin in "Herzog on Herzog". Faber and Faber have been publishing this range of interview books for some years now, with other highlights including David Lynch and David Cronenberg, but Herzog's is a somewhat surprising entry. But at last fans of Herzog finally have an affordable book on his cinema, which doesn't get bogged down in academic hyperbole. Anyone searching for more anecdotes of the raving Klaus Kinski will probably be disappointed; many of the stories and views Herzog expresses have been covered before, notably on the commentary tracks of Anchor Bay's DVD releases. I find it far more interesting when the discussion is placed on films such as "Herdsmen of the Sun", "Ballad of the Little Soldiers" or "The Dark Glow of the Mountains", obscure and hard to find documentaries which have a somewhat exotic position in Herzog's filmography. However Herzog is clearly uncomfortable when asked to elucidate on the meanings and metaphors of his work and is on far stronger and entertaining ground when ranting against cinema verite, Hollywood or Film Schools.

HEART WARMING AND TOTALLY ESSENTIAL

This amazing book is a must read for anyone who enjoy's The great man's films, as well as anyone who...you know what, I'm moved to say that this book is essential reading for all humans. Herzog inspires on each page, whether it be by his own personal experience or by the bombastic words that he barks onto the page.

I actually read this book for the first time (I've been through it 5 or 6 times now) right after my father abandoned my family to live with his new wife in cancun. I guess I was going through a rough time, maybe I needed a more stable father figure or something. Well, my therapist, the great Dr. Tucker, advised that I try Herzog to fill that void, and the mans films completely changed my life. This book is a treasure trove of information and inspiration for fans of Herzog himself or the film medium in general. True story: I work with autistic children on the middle school level, and this one boy Justin started looking through this book when I set it down from reading it on a break. He found the book so engaging that I let him take it home to finish (loaning things out to these kids is always a bad idea, but I figured I'd give it a shot)...long story short, little Justin came back to class the next day, and overnight his speech improved so dramatically that my aide called it a miracle. Anyway, if you're thinking about buying this book you will not be sorry of you do, because if you don't read this as soon as possible you are going to be really sorry. I hope this helped, and HAPPY READING!!!!

Engrossing look into the mind of a cinema troubadour

This is an excellent collection of interviews with a film visionary. Herzog's take on filmmaking, and on life, is original, fearless and inspiring. As a matter of fact, upon completing the book, the reader comes to realize that for Herzog, life and film are the same thing. Filmmaking is a physical vocation that one should be prepared to cry, sweat and bleed for with no complaints. After all, it's not about you...it's about what gets on screen. The interviews are lengthy, they cover all of Herzog's movies up to his latest "Invincible." The questions are knowledgable and conversational, the flow is natural. I guarantee this book is definitely worth your time whether you are a film enthusiast or not. And definitely check out some Herzog movies, especially my favorite, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly."

His radio plays include The Dissolution of Dominic Boot, 'M' is for Moon Among Other Things, If You're Glad I'll Be Frank, Albert's Bridge (Italia Prize), Where Are They Now?, Artist Descending a Staircase, The Dog It Was That Died and In the Native State (Sony Award).

A bitter-sweet tragi-comedy

This play took me by surprise. Clever though it is, it has little in the way of Stoppard's usual intellectual fireworks. Instead it is an affectionate look at the love-hate relationship between Great Britain and India, as reflected and refracted through the eyes of individuals, both past and present.
The play once again uses the device of alternating past and present action, with the present characters attempting to comprehend the past -- but the effect is very different from that in "Arcadia", even though it brings in Stoppard's frequent theme of the nature of evidence. This time the intellectual enquiry plays a second fiddle to a more "soft focus" look at people in their historical contexts.
You probably need to know Brits quite well to fully appreciate the play's wry self-deprecations (not to mention its making gentle fun of American Academia), but it doesn't matter -- "Indian Ink" is rich enough to be rewarding on many levels.

Enjoyable

An expansion and adaptation of one of earlier radio plays, Indian Ink deals playfully with issues of national identity, the nature of art, colonialiss, love, and family. Like a number of Stoppard's plays, there is clever and creative use of intersecting plot lines set at different times and in different places. Also like many of his plays, there is witty and imaginative dialogue. This is not Stoppard's best work, though meeting the standards of plays like Arcadia and The Invention of Love is quite a challenge, and this play is very good.

Everyone who has ever heard of Tom Stoppard knows that he is a superb playwright. He not only catches the cadence of speech, but he gets the vernacular--even of the way Indians in India speak English. Once I learned that he was born in Darjeeling, I started to understand how he did it. There's a wonderful little scene where he and the English poet trade Anglo-Hindu argot back and forth. It's a delight.

DeLapp here attempts to set up a test case for observing how both socio-historical and textual factors play a part in how a person reads a biblical text. Using a reception-historical methodology, he surveys five Reformed authors and their readings of the David and Saul story (primarily 1 Sam 24 and 26). From this survey two interrelated phenomena emerge. First, all the authors find in David an ideal model for civic praxis-a "Davidic social imaginary ? (Charles Taylor). Second, despite this primary agreement, the authors display two different reading trajectories when discussing David's relationship with Saul. Some read the story as showing a persecuted exile, who refuses to offer active resistance against a tyrannical monarch. Others read the story as exemplifying active defensive resistance against a tyrant.

To account for this convergence and divergence in the readings, DeLapp argues for a two-fold conclusion. The authors are influenced both by their socio-historical contexts and by the shape of the biblical text itself. Given a Deuteronomic frame conducive to the social imaginary, the paradigmatic narratives of 1 Sam 24 and 26 offer a narrative gap never resolved. The story never makes explicit to the reader what David is doing in the wilderness in relation to King Saul. As a result, the authors fill in the "gap ? in ways that accord with their own socio-historical experiences.
