Luther s Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther s works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible.
When Luther was prevailed upon to write a preface to the projected complete edition of his Latin writings in 1545, about a year before his death, he took the opportunity to review the high points of his career to show that he really never had the time and talent to produce literature worth preserving, that in publishing these works he was now merely yielding to his friends' argument that his works would be published in any case, if not with his cooperation, then possibly by men who had no real understanding of them. That was one thing. But in that preface Luther also implored the reader of his Latin writings "for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself to read those things judiciously, yes, with great commiseration". With Luther's lectures on the Epistle to the Romans he had a splendid opportunity to share with his students the great find of his life, "that place in Paul which was for me truly the gate of Paradise."

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Martin Luther and The Heart of the Matter

When I ask young people if they know anything about Martin Luther, they usually start with a vague reference to the civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Luther, the monk, priest, pastor, author and reformer needs to be read and studied by a new generation. The commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans is a solid starting point, but if one desired a biography, Bainton's "Here I Stand" is an excellent read. The recent movie, titled "Luther" was rolled out a few years back and is an excellent starting point for people wanting a jump-start understanding the Lutheran Reformation. It features superb directing, casting, costumes, and actors, including Joseph Fiennes, Sir Peter Ustinov, Alfred Molina, and Claire Cox.
Luther emerges on the stage of history as a young man who swore to be a Roman Catholic monk because he thought God was out to get him. The monastic duties, although teaching some aspects of discipline and scripture, seems to have exacerbated the man's fear of God. He wondered, "how can one find a God of mercy and grace?" That, according to numerous theologians and scholars of this towering figure, is the central issue, not only in Romans, but also in the man's commentary on it.
I find that the deeper I get into studying the writings of Luther, much of which are direct commentary on scripture, the more I appreciate him. I highly recommend you to study his material too.
