An almost phisical experience. Shockingly GOOD.

Been able finally to find and read in french -am bilingual in, being from french family- in Albin Michel, for found it a bit requiring to read it in its native american. Still amazed of the quality of this writer, doubtless among the best of the XX century second half. His three short stories collections are master works. His writing strength, brilliance, deepness and wide scope in his matters writing choices are unique. He can drive You from black humour to moving poetry with a shocking easyness. Not astonished he is admired by authors as Irvine Welsh, Chuck Palahniuk, Ray Pollock or Joyce Carol Oates, though nothing to see with them, in my opinion. If You dare to compare him with someone, may it be with Larry Brown, though the deepness, strength and abundant quality in Jones makes him superior to, think. Will finally only say READ IT and You shall experience it almost phisically, there is nothing like. Just GREAT.

Excellent first work

The stories in this collection are amazing -- visual, visceral and emotional. The stories about time in Vietnam ("The Pugilist at Rest" and "Break on Through"), and "I Want to Live!", about a man's dying mother-in-law, are particularly moving. I highly recommend this book -- very powerful for a first time collection. I wish we'd see more from Mr. Jones -- his other short story collections are also worthwhile.
