Luther s Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. In Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners John Bunyan (1628-88), who was languishing in jail, told how a long time before this "the God, in whose hands are all days and ways, did cast into my hand, one day, a book of Martin Luther; it was his comment on the Galatians...this, methinks, I must let fall before all men, I do prefer this book of Martin Luther upon the Galatians, excepting the Holy Bible, before all books that ever I have seen, as most fit for a wounded conscience." Luther treasured St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. Luther's Lectures on the Galatians, like Paul's letters, contain many distinctively autobiographical statements. In more than one respect these two men of God were kindred spirits. Both inveighed sharply and vigorously against their adversaries, but they also never lost sight of the Christian love that permeates the words of those who bring God's message of salvation to their fellow men.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

LUTHER'S INFORMAL REMARKS DURING MEALS

The "Table Talk" of Martin Luther are the uncensored remarks (recorded by his supporters) that Luther made at the dinner table, with family and friends. They range from the profound, to the humorous, to the vulgar, to even some patently offensive remarks (such as some about Jewish persons on pages 239 and 426).
He recounted how a confessor once told him, "'God is not angry with you, but you are angry with God.' This was magnificently said, although it was before the light of the gospel." (Pg. 15)
He recalled that when he was a monk and interpreting the Bible, "I allegorized everything. Afterward through the Epistle to the Romans I came to some knowledge of Christ. I recognized then that allegories are nothing." (Pg. 46) Later, he states that his earliest books are now "offensive not only to my adversaries but also to me." (Pg. 213) He also suggests, significantly, that "We should throw the Epistle of James out of this school, for it doesn't amount to much. It contains not a syllable about Christ." (Pg. 424)
He says that Zwingli "made the mistake of thinking that he knew everything, that theology is an easy art. But I know that I have yet to comprehend the Lord's Prayer." (Pg. 51) More harshly, he opines that "Zwingli and Erasmus are nothing but wormy nuts that taste like cr_p in one's mouth." (Pg. 73)
When experiencing sexual temptation, he admits, "Copious drinking benefits me when I am in this condition. But I would not advise a young person to drink more..." (Pg. 18) He defends infant baptism, arguing that "Christ commanded that all nations be taught and baptized, and this included children." (Pg. 113) He asserts that the pope is "the masked and incarnate devil because he is the Antichrist." (Pg. 346) The legends of the saints are "so full of shameful lies that it's astonishing." (Pg. 475)
Seldom boring, Luther's Table Talk is essential reading for getting a "complete" portrait of the man.

This is, in my estimation, the greatest non-canonical book ever written.
Luther expounds Paul's epistle to the Galatians with an insight, power and depth of emotion which is sorely lacking in modern commentaries. He is not concerned with the various potential interpretations of "problematic passages" that fill the pages of other commentaries. From the very first page Luther cuts to the heart of the epistle-the doctrine of justification-in the way that only he can. His bold words and plain-sense interpretations result in a work filled with much of the same force and passion that characterized the epistle itself. The grace of God and the love of Jesus Christ cling to every word like the scent of a precious perfume. I cannot recommend this work highly enough.
This is the very essence of the gospel as understood by the one who "rediscovered" the doctrines of faith and grace as he teaches us from the words of the one to whom God first revealed those doctrines. If you are looking for an up-to-date critical commentary or a greek-focused exegetical work then you will not find it here, but if you would hear a plain declaration of the power and wisdom of God then you will not find a better treatise apart from the Bible.
This volume contains Luther's full commentary on the fifth and sixth chapters of the epistle (most single-volume works are abridged). Chapter one through four are available in another volume. Unfortunately, these last two chapters of the epistle are only one-third of the text of the volume. The remainder is taken up with an earlier commentary on the same epistle which, honestly, is barely worth the paper it's printed on. At best it can show you how radically different the twice-born, Spirit-led exegete is from the once-born, reason-led scholar.
