About the Author
Hanif Kureishi was born in 1954 and brought up in Bromley, Kent. His award-winning work includes plays, novels, and films. His plays are Outskirts, Sleep With Me, and his own version of Mother Courage. His films include My Beautiful Laundrette, Sammy and Rose Get Laid, and London Kills Me. His novels include Buddha of Suburbia and The Black Album. He is a co-editor of The Faber Book of Pop.

Introduction to a Great Movie

This is the screenplay of one of the more important movies of 1980s - introducing two important themes connected with minorities: racism and homophobia. Kureishi managed to weave them into a single and gripping plot. Reading the screenplay, however, as screenplays always do, is like licking sweets through a glass-pane. The real thing is the movie, so go ahead and see it.
P.S. If you still feel like reading it, try to get the 1996 edition which includes a number of Kureishi's essays on related themes.

I like it, because I don't like it (do you get what I mean?)

This is a kind of strange story that at first read for me was a little difficult to get past the kitchiness of it ..... but then I found out that I liked it because it is, afterall. a kind of quick first take for a movie script ... and after I'd read it twice, I have to admit it bothered me a lot ,,, and that is a good thing as for me that means it touched me ... and that I would imagine is why Mr. Kureichi wrote it ... to touch people.

In text and on screen, "My Beautiful Laundrette" stands as one of the most remarkable global, cross-cultural love stories ever written or filmed in contemporary literature and film. This screenplay is sharply written and an absolute bargain at this price. I recommend it highly!
