Kaysen's tell-all memoir received an immense amount of media attention and critical praise. The book became a best seller and has recently been made into a movie. In 1967, after taking 50 aspirins to abort the parts of her that she didn't like, the author for the first time visited a psychiatrist, who immediately called a taxi and hospitalized her. The money that her parents had intended to spend on her college education instead went into paying for a two-year stay at McClean Hospital. Poets Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell, singers James, Kate, and Livingston Taylor, as well as Ray Charles are among the hospital's renowned clientele or, as they call themselves, "graduates." Kaysen offers good insights on the connections among poetry, music, and madness as well as a vivid account of institution life. She is at her best when gossiping, describing her surroundings, and offering one-liners on her stay at McClean. Unfortunately, her reading is flat and ultimately difficult to listen to. Duh, this book is not about psychology it is about her!

After reading a few of the comments, which appalled me, I feel the need to comment myself. I have read the book, listened to the tape, and now seen the movie. It is NOT trying to belittle or give an actual diagnosis. This book is to free oneself (a.k.a. Kaysen) from that inner questioning. The way in which the book is written is as if it was a self journey. She did not say that BPD was not a valid disorder. However, she did imply she was not sure how she was diagnosed with the label. If you are looking for a witty piece of literature to read this is for you. It is about the trials and tribulations of one mind that is written almost poetically. However, if you are trying to find a book that can help you to understand or cope with someone who was diagnosed "BPD" this is not the book for you. I was upset by how arrogant some readers were with their comments. It is to be hoped that most of you know the difference between self help and self expression.

Living in Two Worlds

First, be warned: this is nothing like the movie. Some of the characters are the same, but this book does not follow the same linear, safe direction as the film. Most of the events of the movie don't even take place in the book. This is a memoir of the truest sense, in that the author explores simply her own understandings of her experience, her illness, and her surroundings. Kaysen's diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, although not discussed until the final chapters, is the overall theme of this book. Kaysen, like many of her fellow patients, is straddling the line between sanity and insanity, between the world outside the hospital and the world inside. She identifies with both the other patients and the nurses, who each represent the world they inhabit. Even though she feels a kinship with her fellow "insane" patients, she also longs for the sense of normalcy that the nurses bring in from the outside.
Although she is declared "recovered" upon her discharge in 1969, Kaysen freely admits that once you're insane, that other world never really disappears. It hovers around the edges, and even affects people who have never been inside a hospital, as if she carries a "crazy cloud" around with her. Kaysen explores the difference between insanity of the brain and insanity of the mind, arguing that each need to be treated differently. She also includes actual documents from her medical records from her time at the hospital, which provide an interesting backdrop for the narrative of the so-called "insane" person. This isn't The Bell Jar. There is no real mental breakdown, no literary examination of one's own insanity. Although Kaysen does explore her own illness to a degree, this is mostly an exploration of the dual worlds that mentally ill people must inhabit: the world of the sane, and the world of the insane.

I read constantly and this instantly became one of my treasures.

After seeing the movie based on this book, I thoroughly regretted watching it first. While I did really enjoy the movie, the book would have been a lot better if I could have made the characters look like I thought they should have looked and not had a book starring Wynona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. While both amazing actors, they do not belong in a book.
Before I read this book, I never really thought how much we all are insane at times; how many of us are insane in a sane world, as Susanna Kaysen put it; but after I read the book, I realized that we are all insane in an insane world.
I completely related to Susanna while reading this novel and discovered that I, myself, in that same period and same circumstances, may have done some of the same things. The movie definitely did not make me feel this way; I related to the characters, yes, but I related to them much more in the book, and at a more personal level.
If you have watched the movie, DEFINITELY check out the book as you will love it at least twice as much, and if you have never seen the movie, please read the book first as you will have a great experience that you will remember and will be with you for a very long time.
There are not many books that you can learn from which don't include large amounts of fact. This book is one that is mostly opinions... opinions of the patients, the doctors, Susanna herself, the parents, the neighborhood... and society in general. Take any side; but remember: It may determine how sane you are yourself.
