GOOD BIO, BAD CRITIQUE

This book qua biography is an improvement on Nigel Jones' earlier attempt. The major source is still Hamilton's correspondence with his brother Bruce, so not a lot of new details are added, but French is a better writer and his understanding of some of Hamilton's relationships (including with Bruce) seems more cogent.
However, French's literary judgements are unsatisfactory. It's probably not fair to read the biography of a writer for first-rate literary criticism: how, for example, could you read a biography of a second-rate novelist like Hugh Walpole or, even worse, an overpraised poseur like D.H. Lawrence.
But French's literary judgements are mostly bad and occasionally absurd.
For example, he acknowledges that Bone's "schizophrenia" in HANGOVER SQUARE is a "literary mechanism rather than a medical condition", but understates how Hamilton's incomprehension on this point weakens the novel, in spite of its striking characters.
He praises SLAVES OF SOLITUDE, Hamilton's greatest novel, but doesn't say in particular why it stands out for its atmosphere and unusual insights into ordinary mortals. And is he really correct to say that the novel ends happily for Miss Roach?
His praise of the Gorse trilogy is very weak.
He acknowledges the power of THE WEST PIER, Hamilton's last but least good novel. He argues that STIMPSON & GORSE is "a remarkable advance on [PIER]" rather than "labored and facetious" (Sadlier's judgement) and has "an air of knowingness" (Walter Allen).
To call UNKNOWN ASSAILANT "a haunting valedictory work", as French does, is nonsense: even Hamilton thought it was a poor effort.
French's most egregious criticism is of Hamilton's brother Bruce.
He says of TOO MUCH OF WATER, an outstanding whodunit, that it's "clumsy and unconvincing". Shades of Edmund Wilson!
