The truth about the English country house

These diaries from 1946 and 1947 are, if anything, even brisker and livelier than his earlier wartime diaries. His judgments are confident and authoritative, moving seamlessly and relentlessly on to the next Jacobean mansion, pseudo-castle, colleague or dinner companion. This is not, of course, to say that he is anything but kind to people he likes or admires or buildings of which he approves. There is much more of the positive than of the negative in his assessments. The book is full of beautiful poetic descriptions of houses he loves, which send me continuously to the computer to try to find out what has been their fate in the seventy years since the diary was written. What is striking is how quickly and accurately he is able to make up his mind, and how faithfully he adheres to his initial impressions. When his opinion does change, he carefully makes a note of it. Diaries can be particularly interesting in showing how a person's mind works, and his was particularly keen in its powers of observation. Obviously completely devoted to the aims and ideals of the newly formed National Trust, he criss-crosses England at a dizzying pace, like the most serious and business-like of bees, assessing damp in one house, rearranging furniture in another, interviewing custodians for a third, despite frequent illnesses, late nights, cars that won't start, and hangovers, seemingly exhibiting a chameleon-like skill in adapting to any situation. The writing is all so vivid that, even though you've never met any of the people or visited any of the houses, you feel as if you have.
