The Somme, where the Ulster Division suffered heavy casualties, has, like the Boyne, come to have a sacred place in the Loyalist Protestant mind. It marks the Union sealed with blood. About the Author
Born in Buncrana, Co. Donegal, Frank McGuinness lives in Dublin and lectures in English at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. His plays include: The Factory Girls, Baglady, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Innocence, Carthaginians, Mary and Lizzie, The Bread Man, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, The Bird Sanctuary and Mutabilitie. His translations include Ibsen's Rosmersholm, Peer Gynt, Hedda Gabler and A Doll's House; Chekhov's Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya; Brecht's The Threepenny Opera and The Caucasian Chalk Circle; and Sophocles' Electra.

Brilliant Play

This is simply a brilliant play that people will take what they will from it. I found it to be a devastating critique of the "myth of the Somme" and what it led young men, through the years to do. It undercuts any notion of heroic sacrifice, but at the same time shows how that notion drives people to kill and be killed. A key line from the play "Catch yourself on. We didn't sacrifice. We were the sacrifice."

Good playwright. I had to read this for an Irish History class and I referred to this often while writing a paper on loyalism.
