Explanation

Amazon.com really should provide a better explanation of what this Bible is. I'll do it for them. :-)
It's actually a Missouri Synod Lutheran version of Zondervan's NIV Study Bible. It has all the features of the NIV Study Bible, plus lots more, like quotes from Martin Luther, etc.
Many of the study notes from the Zondervan have been changed or removed, and many more notes have been added.
Be mindful that the Missouri Synod takes a "moderate fundamentalist" view, including all the baggage that implies.

One of the better Bibles on the market . . .

This "Concordia Self-Study Bible" was written by pastors in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. It was an expansion of the "NIV Study Bible."
What the writers of this Bible have attempted to do is to put a confessional Lutheran slant on an already fairly-good work. Additions made by the Concordia men are marked by a cross, so it is very easy to see where they have made improvements.
Two helpful features were added to the preface of each biblical book. The first is a paragraph or two entitled, "God's Grace in _[title of book]_" This gives a quick overview of the Gospel content in that particular book. The second good feature is a similar paragraph "Luther on _[title of book]_" which gives a referenced Luther quote on that book that you are studying.
If I could, I would probably give this edition of the Bible four-and-a-half stars. While the notes are quite helpful, there are places where a more confessional Lutheran position could have been taken. For example, during the first plague in Exodus, the notes say that the Nile wasn't really turned to blood, but it instead some red sediment made it only appear as blood (Exodus 7:17). This is adding to what the Bible plainly says.
It is these few evidences of the historical-critical approach to biblical interpretation that makes this Study-Bible less than ideal. However, there is still a wealth of helpful information here. Reading this Bible with a careful eye will benefit you greatly.

For Lutherans, a dated, but good resource

Right off the bat, let me state for the record that I am a Lutheran layperson (LCMS)who has had a hardcover copy of this book for years. I decided to purchase a bonded leather copy now due to the wearing out of my old copy, and the price of the replacement.
From it's inital publication in the 1980's the Concordia Self Study Bible has had it's share of critics even within the LCMS community for two main reasons: (1) The NIV base translation used, and (2) the "patchwork" nature of the compilation due to the reality that it is really just a version of Zondervan Publishing House's NIV Study Bible that has had its' notes reviewed and modified to reflect basic Lutheran interpretations of the scriptures compared to the Calvinist/Reformed interpretation of the original NIV Study Bible. One only has to examine the multiple pages of copywright and introductions at the front of the book to see where the confusion starts.
However, once you get past the introductions and get into the heart of the text, you will find a good, though not great, resource for understanding the Lutheran intrepretation of the bible. I believe it would help non-Lutherans to get a copy of the original NIV Study Bible from the same 1980's era and place it "side by side" with the CSSB to compare how the notes differ. The CSSB places a cross/dagger annotation next to the notes that were modified/added, so comparison's are readily noticible.
I rate the notes "good, but not great" because 20+ years of examination by Lutherans has revealed that the modifications made for this study bible missed some points of difference between Calvinists and Lutherans, while some modifications could also been improved.
The bonded leather cover is most certainly NOT real leather in feel or appearance, so care must be taken in the care of it. The binding is good, as Concordia Publishing House has a good reputation for the quality of the bindings of the books it publishes.
If one can wait until October 31 of 2009, you can then purchase a copy of a totally new study bible form CPH called "The Lutheran Study Bible". Based on the English Standard Version (ESV), it is a totally from the ground floor up study bible designed to give a totally Lutheran perspective on the bible. My prayer is that it will manage to fix the issues discovered in 20 years of usage of the CSSB. For now, though, if you are looking for a relatively conservative Lutheran perspective on the bible, the Concordia Self Study bible is about as good as you will find right now.
