I couldn't finish

I gave this a 3 star only because it is written well. I would give a 1 star for content. Every character as far as I got (about 100 pages) was flawed. I got no sense of place. If I hadn't read on the back of the book, I'd never have known it took place in Australia. I love details in a book, but in this one you were swamped with details, descriptions which did not move the story along, but seemed to be included for their own sake. The soda bread incident really got me. Obviously, Mr. Carey never made soda bread. You don't knead soda bread, you don't leave it lying around while you do other stuff. I wondered, if he got that detail wrong, what else did he get wrong. That's when I put the book down.
