About the Author
Darian Leader is a psychoanalyst and a founder member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research in London. He is the author of, among others, Why do women write more letters than they post?, Promises lovers make when it gets late, Freud's Footnotes, Stealing the Mona Lisa, Why Do People Get Ill? and The New Black.

Great title, but totally misleading

Any reader of Freud is well aware that he added many, often quite lengthy footnotes to successive editions of many of his works. The Interpretation of Dreams is one of the most well-known examples. (A new edition The Interpretation of Dreams (Oxford World's Classics)goes back to the first edtion and thereby strips out the footnotes.) In The Post Card, Jacques Derrida pays careful attention (devoting about ten pages) to what he calls two "totally useless" footnotes in Freud's Beyond the Pleasure. No one, to my knowledge has ever written a book or even an article on Freud's foontoes, post-scripts, successive prefaces (all of which make up what Gerard GenetteParatexts: Thresholds of Interpretation (Literature, Culture, Theory) calls the "paratexts" of Freud's works. So when I saw this book on Amazon, I clicked on it immediately and "looked inside." What a diappointment. The word "footnote" does not appear in any of the chapter titles. "Footnote" appears only 35 times in the book, and most of hte time is used to indicate a particular footnote. This book is not about Freud's footnotes. I expect the publisher's marketing divison came up with the very elegant but entirely misleading title. Supposedly a study of freud's footnotes, this book is in no way comparable to The Footnote: A Curious History or The Devil's Details: A History of Footnotes It is merely chit-chat.
