The discussion ends with the response to major objections to simplicity, namely that the doctrine does not pay heed to the plurality of the divine attributes, that it eradicates God's freedom in creating the world and acting toward us; and that it does not cohere with the personal distinctions to be made in the doctrine of the Trinity.

What a magnificent book. The philosophical erudition of this book alone makes it worthwhile - Duby has a mastery of classical and analytic metaphysics. To this mastery, Duby adds a rich set of biblical reflections on his theme, demonstrating an equally sure-handed exegetical gift. And his brilliance in drawing upon the Church Fathers, Thomas Aquinas, and especially the greatest Protestant Scholastics forms yet another major contribution. In clear and penetrating prose, Duby takes up every possible challenge to divine simplicity and answers each one in a fashion that will be difficult, indeed in my view impossible, to refute. In sum, this book is a surpassing theological achievement of the very highest order. I commend it gratefully as required reading for all Christian theologians and philosophers. Clear account of complex topic of simplicity

In this book, originally Duby's doctoral thesis for the University of St. Andrews, there is a cogent and clear presentation and defense of the classical Christian doctrine of divine simplicity.
Several points stand out for particular commendation.
1. The thoroughness of the research. Duby is familiar with exegetical, historical, dogmatic, and philosophical questions. He has not just cribbed from Richard Muller's research, but has engaged in independent study of the Protestant Scholastic sources, including the textbooks on metaphysics by Alsted, Keckermann, and Maccovius.
2. The clarity of thought and language. Metaphysics never seem to be easy, and the attacks on the doctrine of divine simplicity are rather confusing. But Duby never seems to lose his bearings and deftly navigates the complex waters of properly explaining simplicity. That leads to a related commendation:
3. The carefulness of expression. He was very careful and very precise to deploy language appropriately and consistently. As far as I could tell he was fair to his sources, including his debate partners, and handled sensitive topics carefully.
4. It was very refreshing to find someone frankly writing dogmatic and philosophic theology from a standpoint of faith. He is committed to the authority of Scripture, and engages this topic as a believer.
I very much enjoyed his defense of dogmatics as a necessary elaboration of exegesis and his explanation of the inevitability of metaphysics. While there were a few remarks I wasn't entirely sure I agreed with in, in general he showed that there is still a great deal for contemporary theologians and philosophers to learn from Thomas, and his critical appropriation by the Protestant Scholastics. More work remains to be done in the realm of exegesis of the Biblical texts relating to divine simplicity.
The doctrine of divine simplicity can seem abstruse and far removed from our lives. But as some of Duby's sources pointed out, it does have application for Christian life and comfort. This book is an excellent resource for understanding the doctrine; continued meditation will help that doctrine also to bear its due fruit in Christian hearts.
